Lecture:
Topic: Living without the Spirit of God
Textual Source: Romans.8:13,14
Introduction: The complete human
being is made up of the soul, spirit and (body) flesh. 1Jh.5:7-8 “For there are three that bear record in
heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And
there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the
blood: and these three agree in one.”
God Himself
is made up of three personalities. There is God the father, God the son and God
the Holy Spirit. This is what we refer to as The Trinity or Godhead.
Definition:- The Holy
Spirit is the third person in the Godhead and He is the Spirit of God Himself.
The importance or significance of the Holy
Spirit in Christ Ministry. Jh.14:16-18
When Jesus was on
earth, the Holy Spirit was yet to be manifested. But because Jesus knows the importance of the
Holy Spirit, that was why He promised to send Him to His disciples (and to us
too).
v A life
without Jesus is a life void of Holy Spirit because God, Jesus(son) and the
Holy Spirit are an entity. Jh.14:10,11.
v The Holy
Spirit in the life of Jesus helped to make Him withstand and overcome the
temptation in the desert. Mk.1:10-12
v The Holy
Spirit gives direction to Jesus (he was led to the wilderness and out of the
wilderness in the power of the Holy Spirit) Lk.4:1&14.
v The Spirit
came upon Jesus and anointed him, for him to do exploit in the ministry..
Ish.61:1-3.
The aforementioned
points are some of the significance of the Holy Spirit in the life of our Lord and
Master Jesus Christ.
The role of Holy Spirit in the life of a
Christian
Ø The Holy
Spirit searches human’s mind. 1Cor.2:10-12. It is the role of the Spirit of God
to reveal the intent of somebody’s mind or the plan of God to us. He will reveal
what any soothsayer, voodoo professor or magician can never tell.
Efe.3:3&5.
Ø The Holy
Spirit forbids. Acts.16:6-7. The Holy Spirit prevent a Christian at time from
doing something or taking a step for reason best known to the Holy Spirit.
Ø It is the
role of Holy Spirit in the life of a believer to permit a phenomenon to either
take place or not. Act.16:10 cf
Ish.30:21.
Ø The Holy
Spirit do speak. Act.8:29
Ø It is the
role of Holy Spirit to give direction, instruction or speak on how to go about a
particular thing. Peter was spoken to by the Spirit- Act.10:19, 13:2,
Rev.2:7,11,17,29; Rev.13:22.
Ø The Holy
Spirit prays- Rom.8:26. There are times that we will be in a very difficult
moment or passing through a difficult situation, the Holy Spirit in time like
this intercede on our behave.
Ø The Holy
Spirit teaches and reminds. Jh.14:26.
Ø The Holy
Spirit is a comforter, He comfort believer.
Ø The Holy
Spirit gives power. Act.1:8
Ø He makes us
never to feel ashamed in witnessing for the Lord.
Ø By the Holy
Spirit we exercise spiritual gifts. Act.2:4, 1Cor.12:10-11, 14:2.
Ø The Holy
Spirit is a transformer. 1Sam.10:6.
Ø He gives a
new heart to believers. Ps.51:10-13
Ø The Holy
Spirit brings forth virtues- Gal.5:22-23. The presence of the Holy Spirit in believer’s
life, helps to display virtues (good characters) worthy of influencing the
society for good and to win soul for Christ. Rom.5:5; 14:17
People with the Holy Spirit
o
Joseph: Joseph the
son of Jacob has in him the Holy Spirit and that was why he was able to refuse the
request made by his master’s wife. He was able to overcome the temptation.
Gen.39:7-14. When Pharaoh requested for
someone with the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit revealed Joseph as the very
one. Gen.41:38-41.
o
Joshua Nun: Joshua the son of Nun
was a very useful youth to Moses. He was bold, energetic and a courageous
soldier of the Lord. These qualities were present in him because he has the
spirit of God in himself. At the command of God, he became the successor of
Moses. Num.27:17-18.
o
Samson Manoah: He was a popular
character in the scripture. He was a lone soldier. He emerged victoriously in
all his engagement. The power of Holy Spirit was the secret of his power.
Jug.14:6,19; 15:14-18; 16:3.
o
Elisha.2Kg.2:12-14.
Elisha was the spiritual son to Elijah of Tishbite. He was formally a farmer.
He was brought to lime light after meeting with Elisha. He was privileged to shoulder
the double power of Elijah.
There are
countless of people that had a transformed life after being connected with the
Holy Spirit. They became another person entirely after receiving a touch from
the Holy Spirit of God. Dan.4:9; !Sam.16:13, Mich.3:8; 2Chr.24:20, Num.11:25.
Living without the Spirit of God
Imagine the
life of some people that has mentioned earlier in this lecture, what could have
been the situation of their lives if they have not the Holy Spirit in their
lives. Gen.2:7. God made man from the dust of the earth and breathe into his nostrils.
What was man before God breathed into him? Man was nothing. Ps.144:3-4,
Heb.2:6-8. Generally speaking, dust can be said to be useless in this regard. Similarly,
someone without the Spirit of God in him, is as useless as nothing. He or she
amounts to nothing before God. Those who don’t have Holy Spirit in their live
have no breathe and the image of God in them. The different between man and
animal is the breath of God in man. Gen.1:20-21, 24-25.
· God created
man and He put His breathe (Spirit) into man
· But God
commanded the earth to bring forth animals and water to produce fishes and
other living things without the breath of God in them.
· Those who
live their live without the Spirit of God always do contrary to the will of
God:
-
They are interested in carved image. Deut.5:7-9
-
They are into things that have form of God.
Deut.4:15-18
-
They are into worshiping of hosts of heaven,
such as sun, moon among others. Deut.4.
The old world and with the Spirit of God
When a
nation or an entire world lives without the Spirit of God, such a world will be
entirely wicked to the extreme. Gen.6:5-7. A life that is void of the spirit of
God will cause God to always regret. The outcome of the regret off God made him
to withdrew His spirit and thus cause man not to live long anymore. Gen.6:3.
The corruption
of man was the reason why violence fil the heart of all men. In Noah’s days,
God wiped all living creatures because they were filled with violence and
wickedness. Gen.6:11-13, 7:21-24.
Examining the life of some people that lives without
the Spirit of God. Rom.1:18-32
The Bible
made mentioned of some group of people that lived their life absent of the
Spirit of God. The absence of Holy Spirit in one’s life does not require age, statues
or qualification. It cut across all life endeavour.
1.
Cain the son
of Adam.
Gen,4:5-16
Cain was the
first born of Adam and Eve he was a tiller of the ground. Gen.4:2. Out of anger
and jealousy, Cain envied his brother when he discovered his sacrifice was not
acceptable to God. For lack of having the Spirit of God in himself, Cain ended
up being a murderer.
2.
Sodom and
Gomorrah.
Gen.18:20-21
Sodom and
Gomorrah happened to be very big and popular cities in the days of Lot and
Abraham. The cities were known for their wicked acts. Homosexual, lesbianism,
idolatry, bestiality, incest among others were the sin of the inhabitant of
these two cities. On the day the Lord visited them, they even tried to have sex
with God and the Angel that accompanied Him. Gen.19:5-12. When a nation lacks
or is absence of the Spirit of God, because they are spiritually blind, God and
man would be placed on the same platform. The Angels destroy the cities as
there was not found any that have the Spirit of God in himself apart from Lot and
his family. Gen.19:24-29.
3.
Joseph’s brethren.
Gen.37:18-36
That they
were born of Jacob does not mean there is the Spirit of God in their heart. It
is possible for a Christian to be ignorantly be possessed of the devil and yet
be posing to be genuinely born again. (Peter denied Jesus, Judas betrayed
Jesus)
Joseph was
sold into exile because of hatred and jealousy. For lack of the spirit of God
in them, their flesh overruled their heart to sell out their brother.
4.
Jezebel. 1Kg.21:7-10
She was the
wife of king Ahab of Israel in the days of Elijah. She was known to be a wicked
queen. She wrote letter with king’s seal in other to kill Naboth with the
intention of making Naboth vineyard becomes her husband’s. Jezebel in her days
was known to hate God and anything that has to do with serving God. In the end,
she ended up been eating by dogs. 2Kg.9:30-37
5.
Herod’s
generation:
Talking
about people well recognized in the scripture without the spirit of God. The
generation of Herod were known to be blood sucking dynasty. Herod Antipas, son
of Herod the Great; killed John the Baptist. Mat.14:3,10-12. Herodians was
Herod the great granddaughter. She plotted the death of John the Baptist.
Mk.6:17; Herod also have hand in the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Herod
Agripa, grandson of Herod the great, murdered James and imprison Peter. He was
later struck dead by the Angel of the Lord. Act.12:1-5. Herod Agripa II, great
grandson of Herod the great, before whom Paul preached while in prison in Caesarea
Phillip. Act.26:1-2.
6.
Elymas the sorcerer: (Bar-Jesus). Act.13:6-11
He was a
Jewish sorcerer. In one of Paul’s missionary journey, he was seen opposing Paul
on the Island of Cyprus.
7.
Simon. Act.8:9-13,18-24.
Having a
good name but deny the form of true worship of God. He went to the extent of
buying the gift of God. Thank God the Apostles did not consented. However, we
may say Simon was practising voodoo to earn income. This he thought, hoping the
Holy Spirit could also be used for commercial purpose.
Note: It was after Simon got
converted into Christianity that he thought he could buy the gift of Holy
Spirit with money. As usual, everything to him is money. Just as it was in his
past life when he was using his voodoo to deceive people. Vs.13,19 &20.
Work to do: critically examine the
life of both Elyman and Simon, how genuine is their repentance?
8.
Salome-(Peaceful):
She was the
daughter of wicked Herodias. She was the one with sensuous, satanic, seductive,
kinky and murderous dance that warranted the untimely death of John the
Baptist. She was a child that does not live her life in the way of God neither
was she been guided by the Spirit of God. What a pity!
How do I know if I have the Spirit of God?
Rom.8:14
You can be a
Christian and still be living without the Spirit of God, why? The reason is not
farfetched. You will only be guided by the person you make yourself available to.
Rom.6:16. A man cannot serve two master. You have to make a choice either
between the flesh or the Spirit and God or mammon. Mat.6:24.
· When you are
being controlled by His Spirit, it’s an evidence that you are one of His
children. Rom.8:14.
· If you have
the fruit of Holy Spirit in you, you belong to Him. Gal.5:22-24
· Walking in
accordance to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it’s one of the ay to know that
someone is having the Spirit of God in himself. Gal.5:25.
Step to take to have the Spirit of God.
Joel.2:12-13
1.
Be born again (having a genuine repentance):
You must have repented of your sins Act.2:38-39, and ask for the cleansing and renewal
of your inner man.
2.
Receive Jesus into your life and confess Him as
your personal Lord and Saviour. Christ himself is the one that will send His
Spirit unto you. Jh.14:15-18. Love Him and keep His commandment.
3.
Ask God to give you His Spirit. Mat.7:7-11.
Whatever we ask God shall be granted including His Spirit. Jms.1:5-7.
4.
Prayer and Praise. Pray and thanking God for He
has forgiven your sins. Allow your heart to go with your prayer and praise. Be
in thirst of His Spirit, it’s what longed for. Tell God to let you experience
His Spirit like in the days of the disciples. Act.2:8; 2:1-13.
5.
Create time for reading of the scripture. You
can only know God when you read through His written word.
Conclusion: after you have
received the Spirit of God, try as much as you can to exercise the gift of the
spirit which you have received. Inculcate the habit of speaking in tongue if
possible. It will help you to go a longer way.
Receive the
Holy Ghost in Jesus Name. Shalom.
Lecture
Topic: Subjecting
the flesh to promote Spiritual standard
Introduction: What is flesh?
In Genesis
we see flesh as the moulding together of sand or the earth by God to become
human being. Gen.2:7. At death, the flesh would be buried because it must
return to where it’s being derived. Eccl.12:7, Gen.3:19.
Oxford
English mini dictionary define flesh as the soft substance of animal bodies,
(the meat).
Subjecting
the flesh to promote spiritual standard can never be pleasant because they are
both contradictory. God just brought in flesh to play the role of cover for the
spirit. God does not have flesh.
Relationship between the flesh and the Spirit
1.
The flesh (body) serves as a tent or house for
the spirit (a temporary house)
2.
The body or flesh can reproduce itself.
3.
The flesh interacts mostly with the physical
world and environment.
4.
Whatever you do or act upon would be a
reflection or interpretation of what you are having in your heart.
5.
The flesh helps to interpret the language of
the person who does not have the spirit of God in himself. Gal.5:19-21. The
works of the flesh is the language of people that lacks the spirit of God in
them.
It is impossible for the flesh to promote the
Sprit: Rom.8:1-3
It has
always impossible for the flesh to promote the Spirit. The flesh is sand,
earthy and lifeless. Yet it is the place where the Spirit of God would live in
man. When proper care is not being taken, the flesh (the outside layer) might
corrupt the Spirit which is inside. Rom.7:24-25.
· The flesh is
so weak. When trying to obey the law through it, it would result to death. Rm.7:5-6. It is difficult for the flesh to
obey the rule of law not to talk of obeying the law of the spirit.
· It’s so easy
for Satan to tempt us through the flesh because of the lust of the flesh that
would corrupt all part of our body. Jam.1:13-15
· The flesh
can never promote the Spirit because the wishes of the flesh is different from
the wishes of the Spirit. Gal.5:19-21, 22-26.
· Flesh is
lover of the world. It loves being worldly always while the Spirit strive on
how to please God. Rom.8:5-6, Gal.6:7-8.
· Mind, the
processing unit of man is canal, it is very easy to find corruption that would
damage the self-acclaimed righteousness of the flesh in it. Rom.8:7-8,
Jm.4:4-5.
The enemy that must be destroy:
Most of
Christian believe their number one enemy is the Devil. On the contrary, our
main enemy is the flesh. Satan and his cohort can do nothing against us without
the flesh. Devil and his agent had been long defeated. Col.2:14-15. Flesh
becomes Satanic instrument to wage war against man.
Rom.8:5-6
sees the flesh as being controlled by a carnally minded mind. Flesh is the root
of all our bad characters, action and notions. Flesh is no gain to man. Without
the spirit, the flesh profit nothing. Jh.6:63. As Christian, never should you
do things without the spirit of God. Flesh is a symbol of self-reliance, relying
on your good work and effort to please God. Ef.2:8-9.
In a
conversation between Dr James Richards and Ron Meintosh, flesh was defined
doing the will of God our own way. Dr James explained that the only reason why we
sin is to meet a need in our lives. So, by the time we do this in the flesh, we
are telling God to stay away out of our situation and immediately God does.
So how do I destroy the flesh? Rom.8:9.
Ø Do all your
things in the spirit.
Ø Hand over
your life to the spirit of God.
Ø Let Christ
be in you. When Christ is in you, the flesh dies. Rom.8:10-11
Ø Desire to be
filled with the Spirit of God.
Shalom.
Lecture
Topic: Life Pleasing to God: function and the expectation of the
Spirit, Flesh
Life in
the flesh is characterized by the following features:1. Life under the rules of Satan(Gen.3:6,Matt.4:3,6,8-9)
2. Life outside Christ before and after salvation(1Cor.21:1,Eph. 2:2-3)
3. Unregenerate heart. (Ps.51:10)
4. It has fruits(Gal.5:19-21)
5. It has strong connection with the
world: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life(1John2:15-17)
6. It is a state of spiritual death(Eph.2:1,5)
7. It is a desire to be seen, to be heard and to be known (Ish. 42:2)
All the above and many more are the features of the flesh. It is a terrible estate for anybody to dwell in and that is why it is a must for anybody who desires a glorious life to be BORN AGAIN.
Being born again connotes a life has ended and a new one has begun. This is substantiated through water baptism when a born again Christian is lowered into the water to signify his/her death in the flesh and raised up to signify his resurrection with Christ to live a new life.
LIFE IN THE SPIRIT
This begins through the operations of GRACE, MERCY AND FAITH(Eph. 2:4-8). This is LIFE IN CHRIST. Its features are the exact opposite of life in the flesh.(We shall take time to look at the seven features above). One can be weak or strong in the spirit depending on the zeal and enthusiasm with which he/she pursues GOD.
I want to outline six(6) major spiritual exercises that determine our strength in the Lord(whether we are going to be weak or strong). These are:
1. Bible Studies
2. Prayers
3. Fellowship
4. Evangelism
5. Fasting
6. Praises
7. Praying in tongue
The more we engage in the exercises above, the more stronger we become. The less of them we engage in, the weaker we become(John 3:30)
Lecture:
The
Spirit-Filled Life
Filled with
the Holy Spirit’. It explains how Christians can live their Christian lives to
the fullest without been defeated by sin through the flesh. Every day can be an
exciting adventure for the Christian who knows the reality of being filled with
the Holy Spirit and who lives constantly, moment by moment, under His gracious
direction. The Bible tells us that there are three kinds of people.
1. Natural Man
(one who has
not received Christ)“A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of
God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because
they are spiritually appraised” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
2. Spiritual Man (One who is directed
and empowered by the Holy Spirit) “He who is spiritual appraises all things…We
have the mind of Christ” (1Corinthians 2:15)
3. Carnal Man
(One who has
received Christ, but who lives in defeat because he is trying to live the
Christian life in his own strength) “And I brethren, could not speak to you as
to spiritual men, but as to carnal men, as to babes in Christ. I gave you milk
to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even
now you are not yet able, for you are still carnal. For since there is jealousy
and strife among you, are you not fleshy, and are you not walking like mere
men?” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). God has Provided for Us an Abundant and Fruitful
Christian Life. Jesus said, “I came that they might have life, and might have
it more abundantly” (John 10:10). “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who
abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing”
(John 15:5). “But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things
there is no law” (Galatians 5:22, 23). “But you shall receive power when the Holy
Spirit has come upon you; and shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). “I
came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly” (John 10:10).”I am
the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much
fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).”But the fruit of the spirit
is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22, 23).”But
you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and shall be My
witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the
remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The Spiritual Person Some spiritual
traits which result from trusting God:
TRAITS
The degree
to which these traits are manifested in the life depends upon the extent to
which the Christian trusts the Lord with every detail of his life, and upon his
maturity in Christ. One who is only beginning to understand the ministry of the
Holy Spirit should not be discouraged if he is not as fruitful as more mature
Christians who have known and experienced this truth for a longer period. Why
is it that most Christians are not experiencing the abundant life? Carnal
Christians cannot experience the Abundant and Fruitful Christian Life The
carnal man trusts in his own efforts to live the Christian life:
1. He is
either uninformed about, or has forgotten, God’s love, forgiveness, and power
(Romans 5:8-10; Hebrews 10:1-25; 1 John 1; 2:1-3; 2 Peter 1:9; Acts 1:8).
2. He has an
up-and-down spiritual experience.
3. He cannot
understand himself – he wants to do what is right, but cannot.
4. He fails
to draw upon the power of the Holy Spirit to live the Christian life. (1
Corinthians 3:1-3; Romans 7:15-24; 8:7; Galatians 5:16-18)
The Carnal
Person
Some or all
of the following traits may characterize the Christian who does not fully trust
God:
TRAITS
(The
individual who professes to be a Christian but who continues to practice sin
should realize that he may not be a Christian at all, according to 1 John 2:3; 3:6,
9; Ephesians 5:5). The third truth gives us the only solution to this problem… Jesus
Promised the Abundant and Fruitful Life as the result of being filled (directed
and empowered) by the Holy Spirit The Spirit-filled life is the Christ-directed
life by which Christ lives His life in and through us in the power of the Holy
Spirit (John 15).
1. One
becomes a Christian through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, according to John
3:1-8. From the moment of spiritual birth, the Christian is indwelt by the Holy
Spirit at all times (John 1:12; Colossians 2:9, 10; John 14:16, 17).Though all
Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, not all Christians are filled
(directed and empowered) by the Holy Spirit.
2. The Holy
Spirit is the source of the overflowing life (John 7:37-39).
3. The Holy
Spirit came to glorify Christ (John 16:1-15). When one is filled with the Holy
Spirit, he is a true disciple of Christ.
4. In His
last command before His ascension, Christ promised the power of the Holy Spirit
to enable us to be witnesses for Him (Acts 1:1-9). How, then, can one be filled
with the Holy Spirit? We are filled by the Holy Spirit by faith; then we can
experience the abundant and fruitful life which Christ promised to each
Christian. You can appropriate the filling of the Holy Spirit right now if you:
1. Sincerely
desire to be directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 5:6; John
7:37-39).
2. Confess
your sins. By faith thank God that He has forgiven all of your sins –past,
present and future – because Christ died for you (Colossians 2:13-15; 1 John 1;
2:1-3; Hebrews 10:1-17).
3. Present
every area of your life to God (Romans 12:1, 2).
4. By faith
claim the fullness of the Holy Spirit, according to: His Command: Be filled
with the Spirit. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but
be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
His Promise:
He will always answer when we pray according to His will. “And this is the
confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His
will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know
that we have the requests which we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14, 15). Faith
can be expressed through prayer…
How to pray
in faith to be filled with the Holy Spirit We are filled with the Holy Spirit
by faith alone. However, true prayer is one way of expressing your faith. The
following is a suggested prayer:
“Dear
Father, I need You. I acknowledge that I have been directing my own life and
that, as a result, I have sinned against You. I thank You that You have forgiven
my sins through Christ’s death on the cross for me. I now invite Christ to
again take His place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as
You commanded me to be filled, and as You promised in Your Word that You would
do if I asked in faith. I now thank You for directing my life and for filling
me with the Holy Spirit.” Does this prayer express the desire of your heart? If
so, ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit right now and trust Him to do so. How
to know that you are filled (directed and empowered) with the Holy Spirit. Did
you ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit? Do you know that you are now filled
with the Holy Spirit? On what authority? (On the trustworthiness of God Himself
and His Word: Hebrews 11:6; Romans 14:22, 23.)
Do not
depend upon feelings. The promise of God’s Word, not our feelings, is our
authority. The Christian lives by faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God Himself
and His Word. This train diagram illustrates the relationship between fact (God
and His Word), faith (our trust in God and His Word), and feeling (the result
of our faith and obedience) (John 14:21). The train will run with or without
the caboose. However, it would be futile to attempt to pull the train by the
caboose. In the same way, we, as Christians, do not depend upon feelings or
emotions, but we place our faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God and the
promises of His Word.
How to Walk
in the Spirit Faith (trust in God and in His promises) is the only means by
which a Christian can live the Spirit-directed life. As you continue to trust
Christ moment by moment:
1. Your life
will demonstrate more and more of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23)
and will be more and more conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 12:2; 2
Corinthians 3:18).
2. Your
prayer life and study of God’s Word will become more meaningful.
3. You will
experience His power in witnessing (Acts 1:8).
4. You will
be prepared for spiritual conflict against the world (1 John 2:15-17); against
the flesh (Galatians 5:16-17); and against Satan (1 Peter 5:7-9; Ephesians
6:10-13).
5. You will
experience His power to resist temptation and sin (1Corinthians 10:13;
Philippians 4:13; Ephesians 1:19-23; 2 Timothy 1:7; Romans 6:1-16).
Spiritual
Breathing
By faith you
can continue to experience God’s love and forgiveness. If you become aware of
an area of your life (an attitude or an action) that is displeasing to the
Lord, even though you are walking with Him and sincerely desiring to serve Him,
simply thank God that He has forgiven your sins – past, present and future – on
the basis of Christ’s death on the cross. Claim His love and forgiveness by
faith and continue to have fellowship with Him. If you retake the throne of
your life through sin — a definite act of disobedience — breathe spiritually. Spiritual
breathing (exhaling the impure and inhaling the pure) is an exercise in faith
that enables you to continue to experience God’s love and forgiveness.
1. Exhale —
confess your sin — agree with God concerning your sin and thank Him for His
forgiveness of it, according to 1 John 1:9 and Hebrews 10:1-25. Confession
involves repentance – a change in attitude and action.
2. Inhale —
surrender the control of your life to Christ, and appropriate (receive) the
fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith. Trust that He now directs and empowers
you; according to the command of Ephesians 5:18, and the promise of 1 John
5:14, 15.
THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE THE PERSON AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
(Scripture
Portion: John 14:15-16) from our scripture we have seen that the Spirit-filled
life is to be the normal experience of all believers. We have seen why it is
absolutely necessary for a child of God to be filled with the Spirit, and we
have considered the possibility of the Spirit-filled life. Now we are to study
the marks of a life that is filled with the Holy Spirit.
LET US BEGIN
BY SAYING WHAT THE EVIDENCES ARE NOT.
There are at
least seven ways in which we may study the characteristics of the Spirit-filled
life. It would take too long to expound these seven lines of study fully, but
they are briefly mentioned here as a guide to individual study.
1 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN IN THE LIFE OF OUR LORD .
The
Christian life is the life of the Lord Jesus reproduced in us by the Holy Spirit.
This means that the Spirit-filled life is a life filled with the characteristics
of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Read through the four Gospels, and wherever
you note a particular thing about His life, remember that that very thing
should characterise your life if you are Spirit-filled.
2 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN IN OUR LORD’S TEACHING ON
THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT .
This
teaching is particularly emphasised in the Gospel of John 14-16.
3 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN IN THE LIVES OF THE
APOSTLES AND THE EARLY CHRISTIANS.
Compare the
experience of the Apostles before Pentecost and after Pentecost. Read through
the Book of Acts at one sitting, and underline every reference to the Person
and work of the Holy Spirit. Notice particularly the characteristics of those men
of whom we are definitely told that they were filled with the Holy Spirit. (1)
Peter (Acts 2:4,14); (2) the Church (Acts 4:31); (3) the first Deacons (Acts
6:3,5,7); (4) Stephen (Acts 6:15; 7:60); (5) Saul (Acts 9:17-18); (6) Paul
(Acts 13:9,10); (7)the Disciples (Acts 13:52).
4 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN IN GALATIANS 5 : 22 - 23 . In
this passage we have the nine-fold fruit of the Holy Spirit. Do you want to know
what a Spirit-filled life is like? It is loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, gentle,
good, trustful, meek, poised……Compare Galatians 5:16-21; 24-26.
5 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN IN EPHESIANS CHAPTER 5 ,
WHERE WE ARE COMMANDED TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT .
Read this
chapter right through, and particularly notice verses Ephesians
5:19,20,21,22,25; and in chapter 6 notice verses 1,4,5,9. Here we are told how
Spirit-filled wives, husbands, children, fathers, masters and servants should
act.
6 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN BY A STUDY OF THE NAMES AND
TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT . For example, He is the Spirit of:-
7 . THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT- FILLED LIFE ARE SEEN BY A STUDY OF THE EMBLEMS
OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
There are at
least fourteen of these. Look up some of them and see in them beautiful
characteristics of the Spirit- filled life:-
(1) If a man
is filled with the Holy Spirit he will not necessarily be noisy, highly excited
or full of physical strength. The Spirit-filled life is a life of calm poise
and quiet confidence (Isaiah 30:15).
(2) To be
filled with the Holy Spirit is not to reach a state of sinless perfection or to
attain a state where the old nature is eradicated (1 John 1:8,10).
(3) The
Spirit-filled life is not a life free from temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).
(4) The
Spirit-filled life is not a life where further and fuller growth is impossible or
unnecessary (2 Peter 3:18). He is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17), therefore
He makes us truthful. He is our Teacher (John 14:26), therefore He gives us
knowledge and wisdom. He is our Guide (John 16:13), therefore He leads us in
the right path. He glorifies the Lord Jesus (John 16:14), therefore He hides
us. He reveals things to come (John 16:13), making us wise concerning God’’s
future programme.
LIFE –-
Romans 8:2; 2 Corinthians 3:6. Thus, when He fills us He will fill us with His
life.
HOLINESS –-
1 Peter 1:2. Thus, when He fills us He will fill us with His holiness.
GRACE –-
Hebrews 10:29. Thus, when He fills us we shall be gracious.
TRUTH –-
John 14:13-17. Thus, when He fills us we shall be true and truthful.
POWER –-
Zechariah 12:10. Thus, when He fills us we shall be men and women of power. The
Dove, indicating the beauty and gentleness of the Spirit’s character (Matthew
3:16; 10:16). The Seal, indicating the security of the Spirit’s grace
(Ephesians 1:13; 4:30; 2 Timothy 2:19; Revelation 7:3-8). The Oil, indicating
the Spirit’s grace and the illumination of His teaching (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38;
2 Corinthians 1:21; 1 John 2:27). The Fire, indicating His work of purification
(Matthew 3:11; Hebrews 12:29; Revelation 4:5). The Wind, indicating the searching
nature of His power (John 3:8; Acts 2:2). The Dew, indicating the refreshing
and fertilising grace of His presence (Psalm 133:3; Isaiah 18:4). The Water,
indicating His sufficiency (John 4:14; 7:37-38).
Lecture
Topic: ENERGIZING THE WILLING SPIRIT AND
RESUSCITATING THE WEAK FLESH.
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak?
Question:
"What does it mean that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak?"
Answer: Just before His arrest, Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane , and He
said to His disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” ( Matthew 26:41 ). The command
came after Jesus had been praying to the Father and had found the disciples
sleeping instead of praying (verses 38–40). He had admonished them to stay
awake and pray with Him, but “their eyes were heavy” (verse 43), and they kept
falling asleep. They slept right up until the time the armed mob came to take Jesus
away (verses 45–47). Because “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak,” the
disciples were caught unawares in Gethsemane. The word for “spirit” in this
passage is the Greek word pneuma, which in this context refers to the soul of
man or the mind. The word for “flesh” refers to the human body and nature, with
its moral and physical frailties. When Jesus first found the disciples
sleeping, He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?”
( Matthew 26:40 ), and then afterward told them all to watch and pray in order
to avoid temptation. The disciples’ spirits were willing to do what was right.
In fact, just a few minute earlier, all of them had pledged their lives to
Jesus: “Peter declared, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown
you.’ And all the other disciples said the same” ( Matthew 26:35 ). But, as it
turned out, they couldn’t even pray with Jesus for any length of time. Their
flesh was weak. They fell asleep because of their physical human weakness. They
were tired. By affirming that “the spirit is willing,” Jesus was saying that He
knew the disciples wanted to stay awake and pray, but the weakness of the flesh
had overpowered the spiritual desire to pray and watch. Jesus was not scolding
them but exhorting them to beware of the weakness of the flesh. The Lord
Himself was fighting the same struggle against the flesh, but He had overcome
it (verse 39). The story of the disciples in Gethsemane rings true for all of
us.
We can so
easily be distracted from prayer, worship, or a kind act by hunger, exhaustion,
sexual desire, feeling too cold or too hot, thirst, pain, and even a persistent
itch. The flesh shouts loudly when it wants something, and the ruckus it makes can
easily drown out the desires of the spirit. Even when the spirit is willing to do
whatever God asks, the flesh remains weak. The answer is just as Jesus said:
watch and pray. What does it mean to watch and pray? How can that help us
succeed against the weaknesses of the flesh?
Prayer is
straightforward. We know that we can ask God for whatever we need. Jesus made a
special point that whatever we ask “ in His name” He will do ( John 14:13 ).
The phrase in His name means “according to His will.” Is having the strength to
obey, to worship, to do what is right and true according to God’s will? Of
course! Jesus will answer the prayer for spiritual strength to overcome the flesh.
When we feel the weakness of the flesh about to overpower us, we can always
pray.
Watchfulness
is the other weapon we have against the weakness of the flesh. The apostle Paul
said, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And
God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But
when you are tempted, he will also provide away out so that you can endure it”
( 1Corinthians 10:13 ). We should watch for the “way out.” Spiritual watchfulness
sees the temptation coming and prompts prayer. The fact that the flesh is a
natural ally to temptation makes spiritual alertness all the more important.
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty”
( Proverbs 22:3 ).
The spirit
of a believer is willing to follow God, but the flesh is weak. The demands,
desires, and fears of human nature can pull us way off track. Satan has set up
the world to appeal to the weaknesses of the flesh: lust, greed, gluttony, and
other sins are directly related to the demands of the body. Is it any wonder
that almost every advertisement you see and hear speaks to the fulfilment of
the lust of the flesh? Another weakness of the flesh is the fear that we will
not be taken care of. But Jesus spoke to this fear too: “I tell you, do not
worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you
will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at
the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and et
your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (
Matthew 6:25–26 ).
The spirit
is willing, but the flesh is weak. All believers know the struggle. But when we
watch and pray—when we remain spiritually alert and appeal to God for help—we
can find strength in the time of need (see Psalm 46:1 and Hebrews 4:16 ). And
when we fail, “we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous
One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also
for the sins of the whole world” ( 1 John 2:1–2 ).

blessed is our God, He whom the heaven and the earth adorn. He whom is no
compare. By His benevolence grace which we received, becomes the reason why we
were called the children of God. Holiness is His nature, because His been being
is holiness, without blemish. He wills that we should be like Him. He thought
it not pilfering for us to be equal with Him in holiness, truth and
righteousness. Even though we fail to be like Him, and fail to be as He is. He
gave us grace to be closer with Him.
This is my greetings to welcome us
back again into this lesson afresh. I also believe, there is one thing the Lord
is trying to correct in the life of everyone that is privileged to be in
contact with this lesson. I pray that, the necessary correction shall take
place in our live in Jesus name. Amen.

The
custodian of the law and the reason why: Exodus.19:1-25

ochebed daughter of Levi married
Amram a son of Levi when the children of Israel were in the bondage of the
Egyptian. They had three children; Miriam, Aaron and Moses. Num.26:59,
Ex.2:1ff. Moses grew up in the palace of Pharaoh, but he knew the story of how
he got to the palace of Pharaoh. Even though he was being referred to as an
Egyptian prince, he did not like the Egyptian above his own kindred. For not
loving the Egyptian above his own people was the reason why Pharaoh seek for
his life when he heard about his not loving an Egyptian above his own kindred.
Ex.2:11-15.
He got married in the land of Midian
at Penuel’s house otherwise known as Jetro. Ex.2:18-22. He spent forty years
with him. A spectacular event which he saw made him to return to Egypt. The
fire was burning but the bush was not consumed. It was an incredible and
unexplainable to Moses. As he was moving closer to see the spectacular event,
the voice of the Lord came to him from the fire. This made Moses to return to
Egypt in other to be able to deliver the message which the Lord had sent him,
because if he fails to return to Egypt, there is no how he can deliver the
errand. Ex.3:1-15.
Some of the errand which God had sent
us needed us to leave our immediate environment before it can be delivered. If
Moses did not leave Median, how will he have deliver Israel from the servitude
of the Egyptian. Don’t let us be slothful whenever God is sending us out for
evangelical purpose to save. Even if the area does not cherish the gospel, I
want us to know that, our going is a great testimony to stand against them and
to support God at the place of judgement. Ps.51:4c,d; Ish.52:7, Lk.10:12-15.

fter several tortures,
calamities and uneasiness, Moses led his kindred out of the land of Egypt. They
left Egypt the day their staying in Egypt clock four hundred and forty years.
Ex.12:40,41. On the fifteenth day of the first month was the day Israel left Egypt.
[month Nisan happened to be their first
month equivalent to our April]. The Israelite stopped at three different
places before the crossing of the red sea. Num.33:5-8. It was this red sea that
separated Israel and the Egyptians at that time. It was a great deliverance to
the children of Israel, for God has never helped anyone as that before that
time. Your situation or your struggle has not gone beyond been helped by God.
All you need is to rely in Him and to trust in His saving power for perfection
of miracle.
The law was
given: Deut.5:2-5
I
|
t was not Moses that requested for
the law from God, but God gave him the law (1) for the children of Israel to
have perfect heart (2) for them not to angered God continually (3) for them to
acknowledge the right way to worship God (4) for them to serve God with one
heart (5) for them to serve God in
awe; and (6) for them to be separated totally from sin.
Ten was the commandment which God
gave to Moses. Deut.5:6-21, Ex.20:1-17. This law was in three segment. The first
batch expresses the unison between God and man. The second segment is on man to
man relationship, while the third one is on what we should be. In relating with
God, this when we will know what God want and things that He hates. These and
many more are what could be derived from the ten commandment which Moses
received from God.
This law which Moses received is
popularly being referred to as the mosaic law. Josh.8:31, 1Kg.2:3, 2Kg.14:6,
Mlk.4:4, Act.13:39; even though we all knew Moses was not the writer of the
law. Ex.24:12; 31:18. But because, he was the custodian of this law, that is
why it’s been referred to as the mosaic law.
The law that
was given to him:

en were the commandment which Moses
received from the Lord, apart from some provisional laws in Deut.30; 22;
21:10ff; 20:1ff; 19:1ff; 14:1ff, Num.30:1ff; 6:1ff, Lev.18:1-27:34, among
others.
This ten commandment was the first
set among the precepts which God gave to Moses. This is why the commandment
became so popular among other laws. These are the laws in accordance with the
record we have in the book of Exodus.20:1-17:
1.
Thou shall have no other gods beside me. V3
2.
Thou shall not make for yourself any graven image, or any
likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath,
or that is in the water under the earth: thou shall not bow down thyself to
them nor serve them. V4-5
3.
Thou shall not take the name of thy Lord Godin vain v7
4.
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy v8
5.
Honour thy father and mother v12
6.
Thou shall not kill v13
7.
Thou shall not commit adultery v14
8.
Thou shall not steal v15
9.
Thou shall not bear false witness v16
10. Thou shall not covet v17
These were the first ten commandments
which God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. we shall have the breakdown of these
laws before we conclude this lesson. Do you keep to this laws? You are expected
to ponder on it. Or do you also believe the laws are of no significant to us
any longer? We shall expatiate on it later on.
Grace and
the multiplication of sin:
I
|
n our previous lecture, we have
deliberated so much on grace and multiplication of sin. No matter how graceful
someone becomes, there is no room for sinning under the auspices of grace. God
did not give grace for the sake of continual sinning but to have freedom from
the power of destruction which the law has. This is why God did not sent Christ
into the world to judge the world but rather to save mankind. Jh.3:17.
Sin keeps multiplying everywhere,
including in the church of God. People are hiding under the grace in order to
indulge sinning, with the notion of being covered by the grace. They are using
this to support themselves even though, their conscience did not allow them to
have rest. Their conscience always condemned them as regard the particular sin.
If we take a step as believers, we
are expected to first check the ten commandments, whether is in support or
against what we are about to do. No matter how sure is the grace over someone,
sinning against any of the ten commandment will send such person to hell. Don’t
let’s give our live to sinning, thinking that we are enjoying the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
Mosaic law
in grace: law that grace does not abolish – Mat.5:17

oses was the source of laws in the
Bible. Josh.8:31,1Kg.2:3, Dan.9:13. By him God gave man the law. He established
it as he hath been sent. The Israelite throughout their life, used the
commandment which Moses gave to them. Even though, Moses received the law from
God, Ex.31:18; yet, they still pointed at Moses as the custodian of it.
Mosaic law is in two categories. The
first is the one which God himself write on a table of stone otherwise known as
the tablets. Ten were the commandment which God write that day. The incident
happened on mount Sinai after the crossing of the red sea. Ex.20:1-17.
The second category of mosaic law are
the ones which Moses write by himself when God was talking or which came about
as a result of an incidence that happened, which after Moses have heard or
consulted God about it, the outcome of his consultation with God might end up
making such thing outcome a law. Ex.21-23, Lev.12-15, Num.27:1-11.
There is no how we can talk about
Jesus without mentioning the grace. It is one of the reason why Christ came
into the world. We have deliberated so much on grace in one of our previous lessons.
Let’s look at the intercept or unison in Mosaic law and grace which Christ
brought. Are they at anywhere contradict one another?
Let’s first talk about the ten
commandments which is the first begotten among the mosaic laws and what grace
have said about it.
Ex.20:1-7;
Ø thou shall have no other
gods beside me v3 > Lk.4:8
Ø thou shall not make for
thyself any image, nor of the things beneath the earth, nor of the thing
beneath the water, you shall not bow to them neither shall you serve them v4-5
> Act.17:29
Ø Thou shall not take the
name of thy Lord God in vain v7 > Mat.5:33
Ø Remember the sabbath day
to keep it holy v8 > Mk.2:27, Lk.6:5
Ø Honour thy father and
mother v12 > Lk.18:20, Eph.6:2, Mat.19:19
Ø Thou shall not kill v13
> Mt.5:21, Rom.13:9
Ø Thou shall not commit
adultery v14 > Mat.5:27, Mk.7:21, Lk.16:18
Ø Thou shall not steal v15
> Mat.19:18, Rom.13:9, 1Thes.4:6
Ø Thou shall not bear false
witness v16 > Mat.19:18
Ø Thou shall not covet v17
> Lk.12:15, Eph.5:3
If man is under the grace, can we go
against any of these laws? Does grace allow one to serve other gods? Does grace
allow us to carve idol and be worshipping it in place of God? Does grace allow
us to be mentioning the name of God vainly? Does grace allow abuse of grace,
and nullify the purpose of its establishment? Does grace support we become
heady against our parent? Does grace support murder, or shedding of human’s
blood? Does grace allow us to commit fornication and adultery? Because we are
in the dispensation of grace, can we continue stealing and be taking what does
not belong to us? Does someone who enjoy the grace which Christ brought bear
false witness, and be saying what has never happened, are we not under the
grace? Can we covet and convert what is never ours to becomes ours, since we
are under the grace?
If we examine this issue critically,
no one can absolutely enjoy the grace which Christ brought without been a good practitioner
of mosaic laws. God gave the law in order for us not to go into sinning. Was
the grace established for multiplication of sin? God forbid! Grace is for the
perfection of the law. Grace is for freedom which the law does not give unto
us. Grace is not meant for sinning. Many who enjoy grace believe they can dabble
into sinning whichever way they like, without any repercussion. Yes, but
absolutely no. Grace was given so that God would not be blamed of impatient in
man’s condemnation. Ps.51:4bc.
I am pleading with every pilgrim to
heaven at this hour, to be mindful of abuse of the grace which Christ brought for
mankind. We should never have it a thought that the grace we enjoy gives room
for sinning. No, never, not at all! Grace does not encourage sinning. It is the
law that made us to identify sin. If man would be without sinful in a grace
dispensation, such a person must know the law and keep it. Lk.18:18-21.
Where the
law contradicts Grace
J
|
udgement is a point at which grace
and law seems to be contradicting one another. I want us to be attentive and
patient to the explanation regarding it. Whenever man sinned. Judgment comes immediately
if it is in the dispensation of the law. Ex.18:4,20; Rom.6:23; Jam.1:15. But if
it is a graceful dispensation, judgment will come but not immediately unlike
what we have in dispensation of the law. Time to repent will be given to the
sinner to repent of the sin which he has committed. After this, if he fails to
use the hour of repentance been given to him, a time would come of which he
will not be able to amend anything he had done wrongly, it will only happen
after which the person have died. Eccl.9:10. The person that enjoys grace may
hold on to sin until the time of his death, it is after this that judgement
would follow. If he hath well spent his moments of grace, and ask for forgiveness
before he died, it is compulsory according to the law of grace which we
have learnt, such a person would obtain forgiveness. But as regard the law,
once you sin, the punishment and death is its consequence. Grace is very simple
to be expressed for man. But if it’s abused, it would take one into the ever
burning fire of hell. Ps.9:17.
I am pleading to us to know the
importance of the grace which Christ hath given to us. We should not abuse this
grace. If God gives us the privilege of repentance after sinning. it should
never be dimmed fit to toy with sin because we have been given the grace. Abuse of grace is very
disastrous. Once you die, there is no more remedy. 1Pet.5:10.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will give
us the expected understanding of His word in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
