Theme: I AM ANOINTED.
TOPIC: ANOITING AND THE ANOITED.
TEXT: PS 89:20-37, Acts 2:1-4, Isa 61:1-3, Lk 4:18-19, Jn 7:38, 2Cor 1:21-22, 1Jn 2:20,27.
INTRODUCTION: Anointing is a biblical language Ex 30:22-25 (it is Divine), it is the process of pouring oil on someone to separate Him from others. Men and women rub or pure fragrance and ointment on their bodies for purpose best describe as special to them, like when going out on an occasion, appearing before a king or a noble Est. 2:12, Ruth3:3, Isah. 57:9, Healing of wounds Isa. 1:6, Lk. 10:34, preparing weapon for war Isa 21:5 for burial Matt 26:12, Mk 16:1, Lk 23:56. When this happen, it is said that, they anoint the fellow or themselves. But this will not undermine the fact that the language belongs to our God. Ex 29:7, 25:6, 28:41, Lev 8:2, 10:7, 21:10, Num. 35:25. Our God has men and women He called for His work from generation to generation. 1Sam 16:1, Acts 13:1. The unction (1Jn 2:20,27 KJV) He endowed them with, to do His work is what we termed anointing today as seen in the Bible. The Anointed is a man or woman on whose head the anointing oil was poured or let’s take it as someone consecrated for the Lord’s work. Ps 89:20. When you receive God’s holy oil, we call you the Lord’s anointed. 1Sam 2:35, 24:6,10, 26:23, 1Chr 16:22. In the Old Testament days, God’s holy oil were used to anoint those He called for His service by instructing prophets to anoint them. 1sam 16:1,1king 19:15-16. In the New Testament time, the Holy Spirit do the anointing Himself, oil or no oil. Most leaders of the church in the New Testament laid hand to transfer God's holy anointing as directed by the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:1-3.
Anointing goes with the calling of God, if you are called by God you shall be anointed by Him. The basic reason for the call of God and His anointing on whomsoever is to preach the Gospel and save men from sin, devil and eternal damnation Lk 4:18.
1. THE UNIQUENESS OF THE ANOINTING.
The Anointing consecrate make one Holy Ex 30:30
It gives vision and directions Gen 12:1, 13:ff
Give you power to demonstrate Spiritual gift. Lk 9:1-5
An anointed one is given a clear vision. Num 12:5-8
By the anointing yokes were been broken Isa 10:27
If you are anointed God will call you His servant. Josh 1:1:-2
Anointing is a wisdom bank James 1:5.
It brings special abilities 1 Cor 12, Ex 35:30
It’s not common
Works every time.
Can’t be bought. Acts 8:9-24
Incomparable
Note: we talk of transfer of anointing, yes but the Holy Spirit decide how the anointing works in every believer. Elisha receive anointing even double portion through Elijah yet he never call down fire with the anointing. 2KG 2:1ff
SOME OF THE ANOINTED INDIVIDUAL IN THE BIBLE.
Abraham called to be father of many nations. Gen 12:1ff
Moses anointed as a deliverer of Israel out of Egypt Ex 3:1ff
Joshua to lead Israelites to the promised land Num. 27:12-23
Samuel called as prophet 1Sam 3:1ff
David anointed as a king. 1Sam 16:1ff
Mary a virgin is the mother of our saviour Lk 1:26-38.
Our Lord Jesus Anointed to die for sins of men, no wonder! Others reject the task even Angels. Rev 5, Acts.10:38.
PURPOSE OF ANOINTING.
There are intended purpose for the anointing on the head of the anointed. God is not a comedian, whatever He does, will never be for a joke. Acts 13:1-3. We as the anointed of God, must work hand in hand to be able to know and fulfil the purpose of our calling. The work of God cannot be done with human intent only, NO! we must listen to the Holy Spirit and do as He says. Anointing can help us in all we do but we can’t use the anointing for a purpose that will not glorify God. Some of the purpose of anointing are.
1. For a special task Ex 31:1-6, 35:30-35.
2. To Lead the people of God. Ex 3:1-10, Jn 21:15-17
3. To praise and lift up the name of the Lord 2Chr 20:21
4. Anointing is for service Act 6:1-7, 1Tim 3, Titus 1:5-9
5. Anointing separate a man from others Ex 27:9
6. To consecrate a man Ex 30:30
7. To teach the anointed 1Jn 2:20
8. For protection from evil and the devil. Ps 105:14-15
9. Make impossibility possible. Lk 1:26-38, eze 1:1ff.
THE CONDUCT OF THE ANOINTED. Lev 22:2, Isa 52:11, 1cor 4:1-2, 2Tim 2:19, Rev 18:4
In stewardship it is expected of a man that he be found faithful. An anointed of God has rules and regulations that surrounds his calling. You cannot live your life the way you desire. You play a game according to the rules so also in kingdom matters, there are laws and ordinances to observe.
1. He must wear the garment of obedience.
2. Be a faithful servant in all things.
3. Be ready to do all things in its time and season.
4. Live a holy life
5. He must not drink Alcohol. Judges 13:3
6. His prayer life must be excellent. Matt 4;1ff, 26:3642.
7. Be a committed one Act 10:1
8. Walk upright in all thing. 1Tim 3:2ff.
9. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit at all times 1Kg 19:11-13.
10. Do the work of the ministry. 2Tim 4:5.
11. Have good relationship with others. 1Tim 5:1-3.
12. Have ability to teach. 1Tim 3:2, 2Tim 2:24
13. Dedicated and committed to the growth of the church.
14. Learn to return all glory to God. Act 12:20-25.
Note: the devil and his cohorts are in for a battle against every one that carries anointing. Ps 2:1ff.
WHAT ANOINTING IS NOT FOR:
Not to be customized
You can’t brag about being anointed
Anointing should not turn you to idol
Anointing is not for personal gain
Not for oppressing others
You can’t tap anointing by given money to the anointed
You must not oppress others
Don’t see yourself as better than others
It is not your anointing
You can’t give anointing, you are privilege to pray for others to receive it.
Don’t lord yourself over the church of God
THE ANOINTED MUST SHUNNED…………..
1. Worldliness 1Jn 2:15-27, Rom 12:1-2.
2. All ungodliness 1Tim 6:6.
3. Financial greediness 1T 6:6-10.
4. Superiority complex. 2Cor 3:5, Gal 6:3.
5. Laziness prov 6:6-11
6. Evil communication 1Cor 15:33.
7. Every appearance of Evil. 1Th 5:22.
8. All this so called Christian organisation (many of them leads to occultism)
9. All good advice that is against the Bible, your calling and the commission. 1Kg 13:11-32.
TO AVOID BURNOUT IN THE MINISTRY.
a. You must maintain a very close relationship with the ONE that called you. Mk 3:14.
b. Read and study the Bible to feed your Spiritual being, stop doing copying and past it to the church. Josh 1:6-8
c. Meditate in the word of God every day. 1Tim 4:15
d. Rest at the right time. Mk 6:31
e. Don’t Run after others, everybody has his/her own speedometer in the ministry.
I can go on and on, but what the anointed must be very careful of, is the cheaply fallen from the grace when one has grown an over confidence wing towards the flow of anointing in the ministry Heb 6:1-8
. You need to do an extensive study of the Bible if you claim you are anointed. Give attention to much study of the word of God 2Tim 2:15. God bless remain rapturous in Jesus name. Amen!
TOPIC:- THE TASKS AND REASON FOR BEING ANOINTED I
TEXTUAL SOURCE: LUKE 4:19
INTRODUCTION:
Being anointed calls for many responsibilities. An Anointed person are referred to as leader.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. (Isa 10:27). I pray every Yoke in your life shall be destroy by anointed in Jesus name Amen.
ORIGIN OF ANOINTING:
The Origin of anointing was from a practice of lice and other insects would often get into the wool of sheep, and when they got near the sheep’s head, they could burrow into the sheep’s ears and kill the sheep so, ancient shephereds poured oil on the sheep’s head and thus made the wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheep’s ears because the insects would slide off. Because of this action anointing became symbolic of the following;
(a) Blessing (Exodus 29:7, 40:9)
(b) Protection (James 5:14 mark 6:13)
(c) Empowerment: (2 king 9:6)
WHAT IS ANOINTING:
A synonymous word for the word ‘anointed’ is the ‘chosen one’.
According to the Oxford dictionary, Anointing is to put oil or water on somebody head as act of religious ceremony. The Bible say that Jesus Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the Good New and free those who have being held captive by sin (Lk 4 : 8 – 19, Act 10 : 38 and John 3 :4)
REASONs TO BE ANOINTED:
1. Like a Prophet you were anointed to represent God and proclaim His word. When the spirit of God encounters the life of believer, the Bible becomes more than a book. It becomes the very voice of God, speaking spiritual life and hope in the ears of the people.
2. Like a priest, you were anointed to serve God, be an intercessor and a worshipper. It takes the Spirit and truth to be a true worshipper of God. Jh.4:23-24. When true worship occurs often, God will anoint that person with a desire to pray for others and to intercede for others. When that happens the promise of James 5:16 became a reality. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
3. Like a King, you are anointed so you could be Godly leader at home, on your jobs, at school or in Church. Leading others can be a very difficult task. But God is still calling the people in the body of Christ to rise up and be the light of world. Mat.5:14. Being the light means to let Jesus shine and to be lead of the Holy Spirit out of the darkness.
4. You were anointed so you could bring healing, hope and the love of God into people’s broken lives. In the old and new testament of the bible, sick people were often anointed. This marked the person as someone under the loving care of the great physician, Jesus. And Jesus is still healing and bringing hope into people’s life through the prayer of His anointed. Are you willing to be among His anointed ministers? know for sure that anointing is meant for special purposes.
TASKS OF ANOINTING:
The anointing is so precious because grace flow from the head to the body by means of the anointing. The task of the anointing is to maintain the link between the body as, well as the link between all the members.
The anointing is the operation of the Holy Spirit within man. The relationship between the Holy Spirit, Christ and the Church can be compare to the nerves in the human body which are interwoven and connected, one to another. The nerves direct and coordinate all the members of the body. The head communicates and direct all the members through the nerves and through nerves all the members are related one to another as well. All the members in body moves according to direction of the nerves submitting to the head. Likewise, in the spiritual body, the Holy Spirit carries the thought of the head to all the members. As members of the body of Christ, we have to yield to the Authority of the Holy Spirit.
When we yield to the Authority of the Holy Spirit, we are yielding to the head. When we grieve the Holy Spirit, we frustrate our relation will be head. We hold the head by simple yielding to the spirit.
STEPS TO TAKE TO REMAIN UNDER ANOINTING:
Firstly, what God has ordained for us to have, we shall have them as long as we stay in position. No matter who shows up or how physically fit our opponents may appear in man’s eyes, at the end of the day, God is would still be God.
Secondly, a physical anointing does not mandate a speedy course to the palace or the task assigned.
The carriers of anointing must use it wisely, not for popularity, personal gain, riches, power or oppression. The carrier of anointing evolves from humble beginnings and anointing rest on the ability to remain humble.
Pride is a weapon of mass destruction when place alongside of the anointing. Jm.4:6. Hence, the anointing of god is designed mainly to equip us for service to God, fellow humans and to bring all glory unto God.
Many people refuse to operate in their calling due to lack of confidence in themselves and their abilities.
CONCLUSION:
Well, once God has called us, we can be sure He will equip us. The anointing will qualify the unqualified. Remember what God called you for, He will provide for you, we must trust God to do the work in and through us. We must not only rely in our gifts alone so as not to fail and fall. But when we look to the all-knowing, all sufficient God, victory will be the final deal. There is a supernatural anointing which God has tagged your name on it. Prepare to have it now!

Samson the Anointed versus Delilah the destroyer
INTRODUCTION: I praise God of our calling who in his infinite mercy find me out to be his Anointed in carrying out Gospel His mandate. Likewise, I appreciate my Pastor, Pastor Abiodun Habakkuk and his amiable wife Lady Evangelist Habakkuk, All the anointed Ministers of the Gospel. I salute you all; I pray that God will see us through in Jesus name. Amen.
The Topic I am anointed means to be divinely ordained in other to carry out God’s work in area of deliverance, setting people at liberty from evil bondage, liberating from spiritual blindness and to set people on God’s part in other to reign with Him on the last day.
I am anointed. You are anointed, the anointing of God upon you will make you to do some drastic things that goes beyond human understanding, this includes:
1. Anointing will make you more important in the society.
2. The power of God will rest upon you like that of David, Elijah, Samson, and Elisha among others.
3. Through the anointing, you will operate under a new management. David killed Goliath while Samson killed the Philistines when they operated under new management.
4. When anointing fixed you; mercy, favour, wisdom and knowledge of God will rest upon you, just like it happens in the days of Daniel. Dan. 2:1-20
5. Anointing will make you untouchable. Psalms:105:15 touch not my anointed and do my servant no harm.
6. Anointing destroys yoke. Ish.10:27
Lecture 1: Samson the Anointed versus Delilah the destroyer.
Samson was born at the time the Philistines was afflicting the nation of Israel. Israel sinned against God; God allow their enemies to afflict them in other to bring them back to Him. Before Samson was born, instruction has been given as regards the kind of anointing he carries. He was anointed from the womb and was commissioned to lead and to set Israel at liberty from the bondage of the Philistine.
Samson was ordained as a deliverer. An anointed man of God enjoys God’s divine support, they always have the backing of God. I want to say that we are all anointed and chosen by God. You are ordained by God for divine purpose. The purpose of and why God calls individual and the grace on each calling are different. Each and every minister of the gospel are different in purpose and grace that fused with their callings. Your diligence will make you prosper if you decide to do the work of the ministry well. There is no reason why an anointed man of God should be messed, because he carries the anointing of God upon himself. Samson called on God when he was to die, he was strengthened and restored for the last challenge. Judges 16:28. Knowing fully well that Samson have sinned against God’s will and command, yet, God never change his covenant with his anointed. David said to Saul that I have opportunity to kill you but I will not because of the anointing of God upon you. An anointed man of God is expected to have some of these attributes among others: (1) know how to praise God (2) Devote your time to the word of God II Timothy 2:15 II Timothy 3:15 (3) Praying and fasting (4) you must be filled with God’s Spirit Romans 12:10-11. Samson in sobriety called on God when he realized he had been put to shame. Every anointed man or woman is expected to fulfil the purpose why he/she is anointed. You as an anointed, should also be concern on how the purpose of God why you are anointed will come to past. God uses foolish things to confound the wise. Samson reconciled with God, every anointed vessel is expected to reconcile with God immediately after sinning. Don’t wait until you are about to die. You should remember that, (1) not everyone has Samson’s grace, ‘the last breath grace’. (2) How is your relationship with God? Your understanding about God has a lot to do whenever you are taking step to reconcile with God. A clean heart and a right spirit is needed before anyone could speak with God. Psalm 51:10-12; 10 say create in me a clean hearth O God and renew a right spirit within me. 12: restore to me the joy of your salvation. which means once you fall into sin something as been taken away from you, but once you have come back to you maker that thing need to be restore. If only this generation anointed men and women could find their ways back to God, God is willing to save us all and to refresh everyone. People love flamboyant things that quickly perish, this is the spirit of Delilah. She received money and things that would not last. Lusting after perishable things is like possessing the spirit of Delilah who desired for the sake of money delivered Samson into the hands of his enemies. (1) Samson aimed at making Delilah a queen but she floored herself on the ground. (2) It was thoughtful that Delilah might end up a harlot because people may not like to have her hand in marriage. (3) Because she destroyed God’s anointed, God must have placed a curse upon Delilah. Who will deliver someone whom God have cursed. This should be a warning to every woman who goes around to floored themselves with anointed men of God. You are placing yourself under the curse of God. (4) Delilah would have been one of the luckiest harlot just like the one who was married to Hosea but she was very unfortunate. Do not allow Delilah to know where your strength and anointing lies. Her target is to destroy. You will not be destroyed in Jesus name. Amen. Judges16: 4-16
CONCLUSION: The meaning of Delilah is languishing, suffering. Those who loves sin are sold into the world. II John 2:15 love not the world neither the things that are in the world, if any man love the world, the love of the father is not in him. I employ everyone to have his/her way back to God.
TOPIC: LEAKAGE OF ANOINTING.
TEXT: PS 63:1, JN 7:38, Eph.5:18.
Introduction: Leakage of anointing is what many are disputing on that it is not mentioned directly in the scripture. This set of people site 1Jn 2:20 as a verse that proof that the anointing which we receive from the scripture abide in us. But wait! 2 Cor 1:22 tell of a sealed that God sealed us with, if one walks away from God and the seal is removed by whatever tricks of the devil, what do you expect? Leakage of cause! Now we are going to learn from the Bible some of the anointed men that leaks out their anointing. Leakage is a gradual discharge of a content through a hole or an opening in a container. Don’t you know what it means to have leakage of anointing? Leakage of Anointing can happen to anyone irrespective of class or theological background. These are some of what leakage of anointing may mean in the church today. 1) loss of Spiritual gifts, 2) gradual drifting away of the power of God, 3) Failing in challenges pose by the devil and his agents, 4) Defaulting in obedience to God.
SIGNS OF LEAKAGE OF ANOINTING.
1. Why giving to others you feel empty. The word of our Lord tells us to be constantly filled with the Spirit Eph.5:18. If at the point of praying or ministering to others you feel void or empty within, my dear anointed one, beware, your anointing is leaking.
2. Serving without passion. When you fell internal reluctance towards the things of the Spirit, you are just pushing yourself into it. The joy of the Lord is no longer your strength then, watch! Your anointing is leaking Ps 51:12. 2Cor 3:17.
3. When you lose the contagious faith in you. Ah! at this point it require much attention when your faith can no longer motivate others. Ps 51:13
4. If your spiritual life is in mess or rut. Where is that excitement with which you relate with God as your father? If you now rush your devotionals, bible study, silent hour to a close sooner than you begin. Beware the anointing is leaking.
5. God is far and far away. The nearness of God to the anointed cannot be over emphasized. If it’s now come to the point where you now fell God is millions of miles away. Check! that is a sign of leakage of anointing. Ps 139:17-18.
6. Allowing external influence. When you can no longer discern between Spiritually motivated advice and influence from the one sent by the devil 1Kg 13.
7. When you are being overwhelmed by an event.
8. Negative thinking. When you discover those evil thought nocking the door of your heart or all that flows therein are negative. Don’t argue with me at this point it is just that your anointing is leaking. Rom 14:17.
9. Losing interest in prayer and fasting.
CAUSES OF ANOINTING LEAKAGES.
I have never been told of a man that search for and find solution to an unknown problem. May I say this that men and women are losing the burning flame in them without being able to figure out what the causes were. Now we will have to go into those things that we often overlook which are the back bone of this problem.
a. Friendship and conformity with the world Hos 7:8-9, 1Cor 15:33, Rom 12:1-2.
b. Little foxes (Lying, living an unfaithful life, dishonesty) all are little. SS 2:15, 1Cor 5:1-7.
c. Talkativeness (wrong use of tongue) Prov 10:19, 13:3, James 3.
d. Covetousness and get rich syndrome 2Kg 5:19-27, Prov 28:20-22, 1Tim 6:6-10.
e. Disobedience and self-willingness. Ecl 10:1, 1Sam 15:22-23.
f. Hatred, bitterness and unforgiving Spirit Eph 4:31, Ijn 3:15, Mk 11:25-26.
g. Familiarity, closeness, and carelessness with opposite sex that leads to sexual sins. Gen 34:1-2, 1Cor 7:1.
h. Backbiting and speaking evil of others Num 12:1-7, Lev 19:16.
i. Prayerlessness and lack of quiet time Matt 26:40-43.
j. Unfaithfulness and dishonesty to God and Leaders 2Kg 5:20-27.
k. Worldliness and insincerity 2Tim 4:10, 1Jn 2:15-17,
l. Unequal yoke with unbelievers (in marriage, business, friendship, and even fellowship) Jgs 16:4-21, 2Cor 6:14-18, Eph 5:11-12.
m. Ministering on altars dedicated to the devil.
n. Immorality and other secret sins 1Kg 11:1-8.
o. Given support or succour to God's enemies 2Chr 19:1-2, Ps 139:19-24.
p. Murmuring and grumbling Num 21:4-9.
By now you and me must be ready to block our leakages or else we are ready to run dry, may God forbid that in Jesus name. Amen!
CASES OF LEAKAGES OF ANOINTING IN THE BIBLE WITH THEIR CONSEQUENCES
All of the cases in the scripture where men leak out their anointing, propelled terrible consequences. We shall take to consideration some of this cases in other to be a lesson for us.

Topic: The task and reason for being anointed II
Introduction: We have been privilege to come to God the father of light, in whom there is no guile. His wonders, miracles and immeasurable blessings are what we enjoy always. This is why I am giving thanks to God for counting us worthy in this eighth edition of Touch Me Special, where God moves His people and equip them in the other to do exploit in their Christian race. My prayer is that, as many that would partake in this program, may they be blessed and be endowed with uncommon anointing in the name of Jesus.
Anointing is beyond the popular Olive or Goya oil we know. It is not a physical substance as some thought. Although, there might be a physical representation of it. Been anointed is to be separated, set aside for a special work. The work of the anointed is always distinct from others who were just sent. Not every messenger would be or were anointed. Some claimed to be anointed without having an encounter with the divine Spirit of God. An anointed is a special vessel, whose call and ministry collaborate with the reason for been anointed. The custom of anointing with oil or perfume was also common among the Greeks and Romans; especially the anointing of guests at feasts and other entertainments. With this, I would present the task and reason for being anointed in this program. God bless you as you study along in Jesus name.
History of anointing
It has been a practice of the Hebrews to anoint. Not only human that should be anointed, substance may also be anointed too. Anointing was a significant consecration to a holy or sacred use. The High priest were seen to be anointed, Ex.29:29; Lev.4:3; Likewise, some vessels were being anointed in the other to make them sacred. Ex.30:26. In Hebrew’s belief, the high priest and the prophets were also known as the anointed. Lev.4:3,5,16; 6:20; Ps.132:10. When a king is anointed in Israel, it also means he has been crowned. 1Sam.16:13; 2Sam.2:4. The prophets were also seen as the anointed. 1Kg.19:16; 1Chr.16:22; Ps.105:15.
Anointing, in Jewish custom, could be used for hospitality purpose. Anointing is used to invigorate or refresh their body. It is being used for welcoming, accepting and to show the importance of the visit payed by a visitor into their dormitory. Deut.28:40; Ruth.3:3; 2Sam.14:2. More so, the Jews used to apply oil for medical purposes, it may be applying to the body of the sick and the wounds. Ps.109:18; Isa.1:6; Mk.6:13, Jams.5:14.
Reason for being anointed
Contrary to majority of people who believed that the purpose of being anointed is to sit above in the highest throne. I will combine both the ecclesiastical and spiritual reasons for being anointed in this study. There are many reasons why God anoint people, but few shall be discussed as regards this lecture.
1. Anointed as a prophet: 1Kg.19:16
2. Anointed as a Priest: Ex.40:15; Num.3:3
3. Anointed as a king: 1Sam.9:16; 10:1, 1Kg.1:34,39
4. Anointed to heal and for healing: Jam.5:14, Mk.6:13
5. Anointed as a deliverer: Dan.9:25;
6. Anointed to proclaim liberty: Act.10:38; Ish.61:1
7. For medical purpose: Mk.6:13, Jam.5:14
8. You can be anointed to receive any of the spiritual gifts: Rom.12:6,7; 1Cor.7:20; 12:3-11
9. You can be anointed to function in any of the ecclesiastical offices: 1Cor.12:28; Eph.4:11,12
The works of the anointing in the life of an anointed
1. Anointing clarifies that the anointed is divinely engaged.
2. Anointing set apart the anointed.
3. Anointing helps the anointed for better productivity.
4. Each anointing has its peculiar grace
5. The purpose of anointing on an individual is not the same.
6. Anointing makes connection with the appointed
7. If baptism is way to new life, then been anointed is way to fellowshipping and commissioning.
8. An anointed is expected to remain fresh and invigorating always.
9. Actually, the anointing is not expected to dry, but yet, if care is not taken, it may dry or decrease in volume.
10. It would make you to do extra-ordinary.
11. Anointing makes the anointed to be connected with the supernatural.
12. The anointed would be heard, no matter the situation.
13. Anointing woks out favour, mercy and grace.
14. Anointing is capable to break yoke
15. Anointing and the anointed are capable to set free
16. What you are anointed for, is expected to be your pursuit.
17. Anointing changes one’s character
18. Anointing gives an identity and attention
19. When you are anointed, your way or mode of life is expected to change
The task of the Anointed
1. As king: to judge and lead according to the mind of God
2. As Prophet: to charge, to rebuke, to instruct and to direct:
3. As Priest: to bring the people back to God through the act of worship
4. As warrior: to fight against the enemies of God.
5. To preach repentance
6. To deliver the oppressed
7. To proclaim liberty
8. To release captive
9. To be an ambassador of the most high God
10. You may be anointed never to sick
11. An anointed is expected to move in the power of the Holy Ghost
12. To teach the word of God
13. To perform signs and wonders
14. Anointed to do good. Act.10:38
Conclusion: The Spirit behind the kind of the anointing you have received would be the kind of spirit that would move you. As an anointed, you are expected not to lose focus. There is failure ahead of every anointed that refused to move in accordance with the rules that guides the kind of anointing he/she carries.
Bible study: Heroes of Faith and their challenges Part 1
Textual Source: Hebrews 11:2; 39
Topic: Heroes of Faith and their challenges
Introduction: Heroes of faith are the fearless individuals who did the “impossibles”. They refused to surrender even in the face of impossible odds. No mountain is too high; no face is too fierce for them. Heroes attends their ground when ordinary human like you and me runs away. Heroes are hearty souls who never back down from danger. At the exploration of Biblical heroes their lives become more impressive. Heroes are people that God performed supernatural through them. Some slew giant while some of these heroes subdued kingdom and gained not more than or shepherd’s staff. They wrestle without doubt but struggled to overcome their inconsistencies. That they overcome their challenges made them heroes of the faith. Their victory over their struggle trials and temptation bought them a place in the heart of God. Each of the character were commended by God for what he or she did by faith. without faith they would have shrunk back in fear. Because they were willing to trust God in spite of their challenge, toiling and temptations, they were commended by God. Faith was an important weapon to them. What is faith?
Faith is the things that makes ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Faith is the power force that ignites positive thinking. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Majority of these heroes were unable to see the fulfilment of their hopes but by faith they pressed forward. Apart from Abraham and Moses, most of these heroes did not see God. God related with them as He does with you and me. Yet each one of them were convinced the He exists and reward those that faithfully follows Him.
1. Abel
a. Character’s name, age and background: His name means (Hebrew: Hebhel) breath, vanity, vapour. (probably so called by the shortness of his life). The actual age of Abel was not mentioned in the Bible, but it was believed he was a grown up adult before his death. Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve. Gen.4:2. Cain was their first child while Abel was their second child. As Abel was growing up, he became a shepherd rearing flocks of sheep while Cain became a husbandman planted vineyard. Gen.4:2,3. God called on both of them to offer a sacrifice unto Him. This was the first sacrifice seen offered in the Bible. Gen.4:4. Probably Adam might have doing it before but the Bible was silence about it. If not, we would have said that Adam must be the one that trained his two boys on how to place sacrifice on an erected altar. Each of them took from the work of his hands. Cain took from his farm being a husbandman while Abel took from his sheep being a shepherd. Gen.4:4. God accepted the sacrifice of Abel probably by fire, since God choses to manifest on sacrifice by fire during the days of Moses and other prophets. Or through the movement of the smoke as in the days of Manoah the father of Samson.Jug.15:20. Cain knew his sacrifice was not accepted. Gen.4:5. He therefore succeeded in killing of his brother. This marked the end of Abel. Gen.4:8. Abel became the first person to die and to be murdered while Cain became the first person to kill and the first murderer.
b. People of his days: In the days of Abel the Bible only recorded four people. It was arguable that there might be more than that since Cain after succeeded in killing of his brother separated from his parent after which he was recorded married with someone. If Cain actually get married, to who, where and how did he get a wife? Since the Bible is silence on it we would be silence too. The people of his days been few, believed to have known God. Adam and Eve had the experience of being visited by God at the cool of the day nearly every day when they were in the garden. We can’t rule it out that they had no knowledge of God. They rule their lives by their conscience. Their inner man was well at work and it was responding to all the matters arises.
c. His relationship with God: When God requested a sacrifice from Abel, he did it with the whole of his heart. By faith, Abel offered up his sacrifice which became a type of what Christ is coming to fulfil in the nearest future. Abel was a devoted worshiper of YHWH. Heb.11:4.
d. Relationship between God and people of his days: The people of his days being few yet knows God YHWH. Adam their father must have be the one that introduced God to them. Adam was the first man, his family was the first family on earth, it is hopeful that they must have the full knowledge of God. The family were lucky to know two dispensations (dispensation of innocence and conscience). At that time there was no form of religion yet there is worship of God. In the days of Abel there was no prayer until the days of Enos, the grandson of Adam. Gen.4:26.
e. His challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): The challenges he faced started when God requested him and his brother to offer up a sacrifice to Him. God accepted his offering while that of his elder brother was rejected. Abel knew Cain was not happy with him but he was ignorant of Cain’s devises.
f. The numbers of test passed: The only recorded test was the offering up of sacrifice. Heb.11:4. According to what we can see in the Bible, Abel passed his test in that he offered an acceptable sacrifice which God needed from him and his brother.
g. Goals from God, from him to the people of his days: God wanted them to have a perfect relationship with him despite the sin of Adam and Eve. He wants them to serve Him in Spirit and in truth. What Abel used as item of sacrifice becomes acceptable to God YHWH. Throughout the history of the children of Israel, the sacrifice of Abel became model by which they communicate and seek the face of God.
h. Test(s) that makes him a hero: offering an acceptable sacrifice. He was the first to have an acceptable sacrifice according to biblical record. He sacrifices with a year-old lamb. He sacrifices with the best from his sheep fold. He sacrifices with item that contains blood which is a type of the atony work of Christ. His sacrifice witnessed he was more righteous than Cain. Heb.11:4; Gen.4:4.
i. His failure: Because of his sudden death, he was unable to have a better establishment for an acceptable sacrifice. More so at death, his blood cried out for vengeance in contrary to the voice of the blood of Christ. Gen.4:10, Heb.11:4d, 12:24.
j. The missed promised: He could not see the reality of which his offering was a type. Christ is the sacrificial offering which all the old testament patriarchs were unable to see. God hath promised redemption for man. Abel was not at the time Christ came to fulfil the reason for offering lamb as sacrifice and to accomplish the redemptive work of Christ.
k. Lesson and teaching from his life: Abel obtain good report from his obedience and his offering. Heb.11:4. We need to allow The Holy Spirit to lead and direct us in order to do things in the way of God. God had respect not only unto Abel’s sacrifice but for Abel too. His life pleased God. When will your life please God? When will you give an offering that would make you righteous before God and man? The Bible was silence as regards the age of Abel at the time he offers his acceptable offering but this we should know, that, the kind of death we would die, has nothing to do with God. What important to God most is our work, what we have done when still alive. Live well, do well, offer a better sacrifice that can speak for you in the presence of God.
2. Enoch
a. Character’s name, age and background: Enoch means dedicated, Initiated. He was the son of Jared and the father of Methuselah. He was described as the seventh from Adam. Jude.1:14. Enoch was himself a perfected humanity. His father was a hundred and sixty-two years when he was born.
b. His relationship with God: Enoch was sixty-five when he gives birth to Methuselah. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch walk with God for three hundred years. God decided to take him away without having a taste of death. He lived a life of holiness, total separation from the world and a consecrated life. Enoch was translated without tasting death. Gen.5:18-24.
c. Relationship between God and people of his days: At the time of Enoch, man wickedness had become sky rocketed. At the time of Noah who was great grandson to Enoch, God had given more attention to man’s wickedness. It had started earlier which might possibly be the reason for Enoch’s secluding life. Enoch in his days was seen to have walked with God perfectly with the whole of his life.
d. His challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): We know nothing about his challenge.
e. The numbers of test passed: Enoch was to preach and prophesy to the people of his days about the coming of the Lord with intention of executing judgment upon all, to convict all works of ungodliness and to judge all evil which man has spoken against the holiness of God.
f. Test(s) that makes him a hero: He believed in the judgment to come upon all unrighteous soul even though he has not seen God judging before his days. His faith in God and the word of God make him to live a life that please God. No one can please God without having faith in God. Heb.11:6.
g. His failure: His total separation and seclusion made him not to be able to preach full repentance to the people of his days. If Enoch had preached more to his people, he might be privileged to save them from destruction. He would have been used instead of Noah to save his people from the flood. (it is arguable)
h. The missed promised: Enoch in his days, prophesies and preaching sees God coming with ten thousand of is holy ones to execute judgment upon all the unrighteous people but he was unable to see the fulfilment of this prophesy. His relationship with God made God to decide to translate him without death. Enoch could not see the coming Lord, more so, he was unable to see the redemption of his people form the hand of the devil. Jude.1:14-16.
i. Lesson and teaching from his life: He separated himself from the world and worldliness. Enoch was the first to be transcend, Heb.11:5, he was transcended based on his relationship with God. Our relationship with God would make God to give us a special package from heaven. The more we relate with the world, the more we become enemies of God. Ps.25:14, Jams.4:4.
3. Noah
a. Character’s name, age and background: His name means rest or comfort. Noah was the second founder of human race. He was the son of Lamech and a ground son of Methuselah. He lived six hundred years before the flood and three hundred and fifty after it. Gen.5:30-32, 9:28-29. He died two years before Abram was born. His name might possibly have been given to him by his parent with the hope that he would be the promised seed of the woman that would bruise the serpent’s head. Noah was among the patriarch who feared God and he himself was a just man. Ezek.14:14. Noah was nine hundred and fifty years when he died. Noah had three sons, Shem, Japheth and Ham. His three sons believed to peopled the whole earth. The lineage of Japheth chiefly occupying Europe, Shem is of Asia and those of Ham occupying Africa.
b. People of his days: It was in the days of Noah that the daughters of men and the sons of God goes into marriage. Gen.6:1-8. The sons of God been referred to here are the fallen Angels that fell with the Devil when God chased him out from among the heavenlies. As they came down to the world, their intention was to pollute man so that the seed of the woman that would deliver mankind, that would bruise the serpent’s head would never be born. So, the Devil’s intention was to pollute human race. Why God said the wickedness of man was becoming great is that, man, having received such a wonderful promise, yet, he indulges in sin with the fallen Angels to destabilize the programme of God for mankind. Gen.6:3-6. After the sin of Cain, we should remember he was the one that introduced the world into blood shedding. Man became wild more and more every day. The wickedness of the people of his days became what God had to pay attention to. Gen.6:5. The Bible recorded violence in the days of Noah as what occupied the heart of the people of the earth. Man was unable to fix the broken bridge between him and God. Man became desperately wicked in thought and imaginations. Their godly heart became corrupted. God was not happy with this, He sees man as having been misled and disappointing. It is opined that at this time of life, man must have been having something to do with cultism, Spiritism and the likes. They must have been involving in medium practice since they are having relationship, communication and sexual intercourse with the fallen Angels. Giants were the production of daughters of men and sons of God’s intermarriage. Gen.6:4. Giants are extraordinary people with extra ordinary body. They were extraordinary in stature, power and crime. So, as their union produced giants, their evil deeds, violence and wickedness became giant and filled the earth. They were being referred to as Nephilim, the Anak, Rephaim among others. Num.13:33. People in the days of Noah were expected to be righteous and just. What God saw in the life of Noah is what God expected from them all. God promised to destroy man with the intention of finding means of ending evil imagination, corrupted thought, wickedness and violence upon the earth and the breeds of giant.
c. His relationship with God: Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Gen 6:8. Service and work precedes grace. Our relationship with God would tell if we are fit to enjoy the grace of God. It is possible probably Noah refused to move in the way of the people in his days. Because if he had, he would have been destroyed along with them. The righteous will God save when destruction is coming to avenge disobedience. God testified that only you have I found just and righteous among the people of the earth. God expect everyone to be on His sides. Only few that obeys would be kept at the hour of destruction. Let us make sure we are on the Lord’s side always.
d. Relationship between God and people of his days: Since the people in the days of Noah were corrupted in their heart, the reproduction of their heart would be evil continually. They have no relationship with God. Those who retain God in their knowledge will God bless but those who forget God in their knowledge would God lead into reprobation of the mind. Rom.1:18-32. Genesis 6:12b revealed that all flesh had corrupted himself. If this verse is well understood, it should mean a self-destruction was involved. Every individual desire to get corrupted. It was as if been corrupt became the order of the day as in our world today. People in Noah’s days have no fellowship with God in any form. Not that there is no way or how to as some opined, but they decided to forsook God and have nothing to do with the Almighty. God sees their wickedness how great it was and their unrepentant heart, He concluded them to be destroyed with the earth. Gen.6:7. A failure generation corrupted with evil imagination and violence assisted by fallen Angels “the sons of God”.
e. His challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): God instructed Noah to make an ark with Gopher wood. Gen.6:14. He was to preach repentance from sin, righteousness and salvation from destruction. Some Bible scholars believed Noah preached for a hundred and twenty years but if the Bible is strictly followed, Noah was five hundred years old when he gave birth to his three sons after which God called him to build the Ark. This means he was called at the age of five hundred years. Gen.7:11 confirmed that Noah was six hundred years of age when the flood started. If it is well calculated between Gen.5:32 to 7:11, a sum of hundred years would be the difference
f. The numbers of test passed: In my course of studying the Bible, I saw Noah to have passed two major test from God. The first which is, He find it so easy to preach righteousness in his days. Despite the level of wickedness and violence that filled the heart of people in Noah’s days, he was not discouraged to preach righteousness. Though, he was heard but not believed, yet he believed it was God that spoke with him to preach to his people. The second of which I will talk about is that he builds an Ark to prepare his people from destruction. in the days of Noah before the flood. It has never rained upon the ground. Naturally speaking, it might be difficult for someone to believe it would rain since God watered the ground by dew and spring from the ground. But Noah, having not seen such a thing before, believed God would do as he had said. This is where majority of Christians are failing God. They would find it so difficult to believe God because they thought what God said was an impossible issue.
g. Goals from God, from him to the people of his days: God wanted Noah to preach righteousness and salvation from impending destruction. Gen.6:7,13. God was expecting them to repent and seek how they can escape the coming destruction. Noah preached but it was very unfortunate that the people in Noah’s day refuse to utilise the salvation that was brought to them. They failed God and Noah which God hath sent to them.
h. Test(s) that makes him a hero: God saw that Noah was a just and perfect man in his days but the building of an Ark was what brought Noah to lime light. Gen.6:14ff. Not that he was not known by the kind of righteous living God saw in his life but he was not the first to live righteously before God. therefore, his outstanding performance was the building of an Ark. The Ark was made of Gopher wood. It was of length three hundred cubits by breadth fifty cubits and of height thirty cubits. (if the cubit is to be 21.888inches, the ark would be five hundred and forty-seven feet long, ninety-one feet two inches wide and forty-seven feet two inches high (according to Jamieson-Fausset –Brown Commentary). It was made in three stories.
i. His failure: After the flood, God made covenant with Noah never to use water to destroy he Earth. Noah and his sons were blessed to be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth. It was after the flood that God commanded man to be eating flesh. Gen.1:28-29 cf 9:2-5. When God created the earth, man was only instructed to eat herbs and fruits but after the flood, God gave flesh to man to eat. Noah became a husbandman after the flood. He planted vineyard. From the fruits he planted, he made wine from them. Noah became drunk from the fermented wine he had made. He strips off his cloth at the expense of being intoxicated. Ham, Shem and Japheth were the three sons of Noah. Ham saw his father as he uncovered himself in the tent. He reported to his two brethren outside ‘jokingly’. his two brothers went backward to cover their father with clothe. When Noah woke from his drunkenness, he remembered what his younger son did to him. Noah blessed Shem and Japheth but cursed the descendant of Ham. Canaan was the eldest son of Ham. So the curse was directed not to the Person Ham but to the generation of Ham starting from Canaan. God has blessed the earth but Noah used his curse to destroyed what God has blessed. Adam and Eve polluted the first earth but Noah whom God used and saved out of the old world became the instrument to counter the blessing which God has blessed the earth. Our world is wallowing in Noah’s curse up till today. Africa is a descendant of Ham the father of Canaan and Ham was the father of Cush, Mizraim, Phut, and Canaan, that is, the ancestor of the Canaanites, Southern Arabians, Ethiopians, Egyptians, and the Africans in general. the Jews were the descendant of Shem through whom the saviour came while Japheth occupied north of Asia and Europe. Japheth enlargement also occupied America. Therefore, the drunkenness and railing curses became Noah’s shortcomings.
j. The missed promised: Like others, Noah missed the fulfilment of a redeemer that would crush the head of the serpent. A prediction promised in the garden of Eden. Noah lived three hundred years after the flood yet the fulfilment of the enlargement of Japheth was not fulfil in his days.
k. Lesson and teaching from his life: Noah was a preacher of righteousness. Ha was in line of the patriarchs who feared God. Noah was a just man in his days. He does not allow the corruption and violence of his days to affect his relationship with God. he sought for God in spite of the moral decadence of his days. His life taught us how to believe God even if what God said seems to be impossible. We should be expecting God to use us the way he used Noah to preach and to save our world form the coming destruction.
4. Abraham
a. Character’s name, age and background: Abraham means father of multitude or father of nation. He was the great founder of the Jewish nation. He was a son of Terah, a descendant of Shem, and born in Ur, a city of Chaldea. Gen.11:10-32. Nahor and Haran the father of lot were the two brethren of Abraham. Originally, Abraham was known to be Abram meaning high father, but God changed his name to Abraham. He married Sarai meaning my princess which later changed to Sarah meaning princess. Abraham was seventy years old when God called him to move out of his people and people of his nativity into an unknown place. Gen.11:27-32, reveal how Terah the father of Abram migrated out of Ur of Chaldees with intention of going to Canaan for sojourning, unfortunately for him, at the age of two hundred and five, he died in Haran in Mesopotamia (a city of western Asia). If Bible is vividly examine, Abraham receive divine call in Haran not Ur of Chaldees as it has been widely taught. Gen.12:4. Sarai the wife of Abraham was barren until she was ninety while Abraham was hundred. Before the birth of Isaac, Sarah had given Abraham her maid for Abraham to marry. Her name was Hagar. She was the mother of Ismael. On getting to Canaan, Abraham settled on the plain of Moreh and later moved to east of Bethel where he built an altar unto the Lord. Gen.12:6-9. After the death of Sarah, Abraham married Keturah and she bore unto him six children. Gen.25:1-6. Abraham died at the age of one-hundred and seventy-five years. He was buried in the cave of Machpelah.
b. People of his days: The people of Abraham’s day while in Ur of Chaldees and Haran in Mesopotamia seems to be pagan and idolaters. God wanted Abram to move out of this kind of people who sees nothing wrong in serving the most High God with graven images. The Bible did not say the kind of idol they worship but by speculation we conclude that God would never ask Abram to leave without specific reason. If they are of God, there would be no reason for God to make Abram migrated. Josh.22:4; Act.7:2-4.
c. His relationship with God: Abraham had a very good relationship with God in his days to the extent of been referred to as a friend of God. Isa.41:8; 2Chr.20:7. The first thing Abraham would give to God was an altar. We can’t really say weather this has made God to like him the more. But in our course of studying the scripture, throughout the life of Abraham, he did not at any time go astray from the presence of God until his death at the age of one hundred and seventy-five. Gen.25:7-11.
d. Relationship between God and people of his days: The mind of God for and on the people of his days was quite different from what God was having for Abraham. It was as if God wanted to wipe off all human race and subdued all land with the seed of Abraham. God promised Abraham that from his seed, all the nations of the world shall be blessed. Gen.22:16-18. Meaning that without the seed of Abraham there would be no blessing on earth. The people in the days of Abraham did not know God like Abraham. They are into idolatry. God had earlier promised Noah never to wipe human race with flood any longer, but during the time of Abraham, He(God) wanted to do the wiping gradually without flood. That was why God chose Abraham through which God’s covenant and purposes will come to fulfilment.
e. His challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): Many are the challenges of Abraham. After he left Haran, he settled in Bethel where he built an altar unto the Lord. Gen.12:8. God had earlier appeared to him that his seed shall inherit this land. (Bethel was part of the land of Canaan) Gen.12:5,8. A famine arose in the land of Canaan; Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn. When in Egypt, the king of Egypt wanted to have Sarai as wife after Abram had connive with Sarai to refer to him as her brother. It took divine intervention before Sarai was restored to Abram. Gen.12:10-20. Abram became rich while in Egypt, Gen.13:1,2. He later went back to Bethel where he had earlier pitched his tent and uses the altar he had built when he first came as the place to meet God again. This is telling us that Abram did not lose his salvation while n Egypt. Another challenge was when Lot who grew up in the house of Abraham allowed his herdsmen to content with that of Abram. Abram decided to settle the dispute once. The land was divided into two and Lot chose all the plain of Jordan because it was well watered. The part that fall on Abram was not as watered as that of Lot’s, yet God promised to increase Abram from that land. Gen.13:1-18. Abram moved from Bethel to plain of Mamre in Hebron and built another altar where he would be speaking with God. Gen.13:18. Abram rescued lot when Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Elisar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of nations invaded Sodom and Gomorrah. Gen.14:1-6. Sarai the wife of Abram was barren. This became a major problem for Abram. Sarai gave Hagar her maid to Abram as wife. Hagar conceived and bore unto Abram Ismael. Gen.16:1-5. Sarah latter conceived and bore unto Abraham Isaac when Abraham was a hundred years old and Sarah ninety. Gen.21:5-7. Abraham married Keturah after the death of Sarah.Gen.25:1. Abraham died at the age of one hundred and seventy-five. Gen.25:7-11.
f. The numbers of test passed: He was able to pass nothing less than four test. (this is the way God tested Abraham to prove him). The first test he passed was his response to the call of God. Gen.12:1-4. Without querying God, Abraham left Haran in Mesopotamia to live in the land of Canaan, even though, God did not specify where he should go, but he moved out following the command and the guidance of God.
Second test was when Abraham had conquered Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him at the valley of Shaveh. There, Abraham met with Melckizedek king of Salem and he paid all the tithe from the loot he had from the battle without being self-centred.
The third was the one that made God to count it as righteousness on the side of Abraham. It happened when Abraham explained his situation of childlessness with God. God responded by showing Abraham the stars in heaven, as numberless as they are, so shall thy seed be uncountable. Because Abraham believed this, God counted unto him for righteousness. Gen.15:1-7.
The fourth test Abraham passed was the test on circumcision. When he was ninety-nine, God appeared unto Abram to walk before him and becomes perfect for the establishment of the covenant between him and God. it was at this juncture that God changed his name to Abraham and that of Sarai to Sarah. God demanded the flesh of his foreskin, Gen.17:24. All the male in the house of Abraham must be circumcised. Abraham was ninety-nine while Ismael was thirteen at circumcision. This was done as a token of the covenant between God and Abraham and his seeds. Gen.17:1-27. This might probably be the time that Abraham begins to be referred to as the friend of God. James.2:23.
The fifth test he passed was the offering of Isaac at the command of God. when Ishmael was fourteen, Abraham was hundred, God gave Sarah Isaac at the age of ninety. God instructed Abraham to offer Isaac as sacrifice unto Him. We were not sure the age of Isaac at this time but we were made to know that Isaac was not a baby but a grown up child. By speculation, he might be between seven to fifteen years of age. Abraham did not argue with God. he agreed to use Isaac which God referred to as the only son and the beloved, for sacrifice. Gen.22:2. Abraham took Isaac to mountain to offer him as sacrifice but God appeared to Abraham not to use the boy for sacrifice but a provision has been made in substitution. Behind him, God had provided a ram which Abraham used instead of Isaac. On that mountain where the sacrifice was made, God blessed Abraham and appreciated his faith. These are the major tests Abraham passed.
g. Goals from God, from him to the people of his days: God wanted to make Abraham the father of nations. God wanted to give Abraham a new world. All nations of the world were to be blessed through Abraham.
h. Test(s) that makes him a hero: We shall discuss three among what makes Abraham a hero of faith. the first to be mentioned is about his calling. Heb.1:8. God called Abraham to go out of his own people unto a place where He (God) will show him. Abraham did not know the place yet he did not argue with God unlike you and me. The second one is that Abraham lived in the land of promise as if he sojourned in a strange land. Heb.11:9. There are many event that makes Abraham a hero of faith but just three of it I would like to share. The third is about using Isaac, the promised child as the item of sacrifice unto God. God was surprised to have seen Abraham responded to what He said. This event makes God to reiterate His covenant with Abraham because he was willing to offer Isaac as sacrifice unto God. Can we say it was so easy for Abraham to use Isaac as item if sacrifice? If yes, what of Isaac himself who was to be offered? Both Abraham and Isaac were seen to be submissive before God. if God would test you, on what will you become a hero of faith.
i. His failure: We shall discuss just two among the shortcomings of Abraham. In Gen.15, Abraham was speaking with God concerning his state of childlessness. God instructed Abraham to make a sacrifice after which Abraham was hidden in a place aimed at looking at how God would eat the sacrifice he had offered. Instead for God to come down to devour the sacrifice, birds of the air were the things that showed up. They without wasting time started feasting on the sacrifice Abraham had offered. In annoyance, Abraham drove the birds away because he thought he would see God coming down from heaven to feast on the sacrifice. After a while, Abraham fell asleep, God appeared to him and made him to understand that his family will go to strange land for sojourning for four hundred years. Gen.15:11-13; Ex.12:40.
The second mistake came as his childlessness lingers. Sarai advice Abraham to marry Hagar her maid. The conception of Hagar made her to rude against Sarai her mistress. The house of Abraham was divided. Yet Hagar gave birth to Ismael which became the first child of Abraham but he was not the promised child. Gen.17:20,21. Sarah was ninety, Abraham was hundred and Ismael fourteen when Isaac was born. Gen.21:5; 17:25. The birth of Ismael makes the blessing of God splits upon both Ismael and Isaac but the covenant was on Isaac the promised child. This serves as the second mistake of Abraham as regards this study. If he had waited, if he had not consented to Sarah’s advice, both the covenant and the blessing in full would have been that of Isaac. Gen.21:12,13.
j. The missed promised: ‘in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ This was believed to be talking about Jesus Christ who was an offspring of Abraham by genealogy. Christ came to save everyone. This does not fulfil in the days of Abraham. He desired to see it but he was denied of it. Jh.8:56.
k. Lesson and teaching from his life:
1. Obedience: He left home and friends at the call of God. Gen.12:4.
2. Unselfishness: He gave Lot the first choice of the land. Gen.13:9
3. Courage: He defeated the robber kings. Gen.14:14.
4. Benevolence: he gave tithes to Melchizedek the priest. Gen.14:20.
5. Incorruptibility: He refuse to receive gifts for service rendered. Gen.14:23.
6. He was mighty in prayer.Gen.18:23-33.
7. Wonderful in faith: He was willing to offer up his only son, Isaac. Heb.11:17.
8. His life taught us meekness, fellowship, obedient and total surrender to God almighty in all things.
5. Sarah
a. Character’s name, age and background: Her name Sarah means Princess (meaning princess of all the race) while her formal name Sarai means my princess (meaning Abraham’s princess). Her name was changed when God changed Abraham’s name in establishment of the covenant between God and Abraham’s family. She was half –sister to Abraham her husband. Gen.20:12. For lack of impatient, she gave Hagar her maid as wife to her husband, which later make mockery of Sarah her mistress. Sarah gave birth to Isaac her first and only child at the age of ninety years. Sarah died in Hebron at the age of 127 around B.C 1860, and she was buried in the cave of Machpelah. Gen.23:1-20.
b. People of her days: Same as that of Abraham’s.
c. Her relationship with God: Same as that of Abraham
d. Relationship between God and people of his days: Same as that of Abraham
e. Her challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): Her major challenge was barrenness. She was unable to conceive and bear children unto Abraham her husband. Her barrenness commences since they were in Ur of Chaldees before God called Abraham to move out from his kindred. When Sarah was seventy-six, because it ceased to be for her as a woman, she gave Hagar her maid to bear children for Abraham her husband in her stead according to their custom and tradition. This became another challenge for Sarah because Hagar her maid make mockery of her when she discovered she (Hagar) was conceived. It was when Sarah was ninety, Ismael was fourteen that God made Sarah to give birth to her first and only child Isaac. After her delivery, it became unbearable for Sarah to accommodate Hagar’s attitude towards her mistress and Isaac the promised child. She requested Hagar and her son ejection from Abraham’s house. This was not too good for Abraham until God stepped in into the case. Hagar and her son were ejected from Abraham’s house.
Another challenge of Sarah was that twice she was about to be taken from Abraham her husband. The first one happened when Abram and Sarai sojourned to Egypt when there was famine in the entire land of Canaan. Gen.12:6-9. Pharaoh the king of Egypt was willing to have Sarai as wife because of her beauty. God sent plague into the house of Pharaoh and Sarai was restored to Abram. The second which was almost similar to the first was recorded after the birth of Ismael. Abimelech king of Gerah opted for Sarai since Abram refers to her as her sister. In a dream by night, God instructed Abimelech to return Sarai to Abraham because Abraham is a prophet. Gen.20:1-18. (Note: this is the only place in the Bible where Abraham is being referred to as a prophet. Gen.20:7).
f. The numbers of test passed: According to Heb.11:11, Sarah passed the test of believing that she would conceived though, she was past age and it has cease to her as its used to be for woman. (meaning: she is no longer menstruating). We can also say that she passed the test of believing that she would be the mother of all race when she agreed with God to change her name from Sarai to Sarah when Abram changed to Abraham. We could see that Sarah had the same vision or she believe in Abraham’s vision which God gave to him to possess a land allotted, promised and covenanted to be inherit by his generations.
g. Goals from God, from her to the people of his days: Same as in Abraham’s
h. Test(s) that makes her a hero: The only test that made Sarah a hero was her conception after it was cease to her as with every woman. At ninety, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac. Everybody had thought nothing good is coming forth from Sarah because of her age yet by faith, she believed the age long promise and prophecy will surely come to past in her life.
i. Her failure: Only a thing could be seen as her failure. Sarah appeared to be impatient as regards her dealings with Hagar. She would have have a better communication with God before taken that step that put the house of Abraham in confusion till today. If she had not given Hagar to Abraham, Isaac would have become both the first born and the covenanted child. He only became the covenanted child because of her lack of patience.
j. The missed promised: Sarah was unable to see any of Isaac children. We should remember God said her seed shall be as the seashore, yet Sarah died when Isaac was not ready for marriage.
k. Lesson and teaching from his life: If not for the mercy of God, Sarah was almost about to miss the promised of God for her life. Though she believed but her impatient would have cost her much. Therefore, we should learn to be patient with God whenever we are dealing with God. there is no amount of doubt that can change God’s standard but doubt if care is not taken, it can change and hindered our answered prayers.
6. Isaac
a. Character’s name, age and background: His name means laughter. He was the only child of Sarah, the second son of Abraham and the promised or covenanted child. B.C.1897. Ishmael and his mother Hagar, became jealous of Isaac at infancy. In his youthful age, he became the intending item of sacrifice. He got married to Rebecca her cousin at forty after the demise of Sarah his mother. He was the father of Esau and Jacob his brother. Gen.25:19-26. He died at the age of a hundred and four score. Gen.35:28,29. (he lived five years longer that Abraham his father).
b. People of his days: The people of his days were found to be jealous of him. They were struggling with Isaac on the riches, wealth and fame of Abraham which believed it has been inherited by Isaac. In Genesis 26, the Philistine in Gerar stopped many of the well dug by Abraham and filled them with earth(sand). This was done out of jealousy. 26:28. The religion structure of the people of his days was similar to that of Abraham. They were pagan who knows nothing except idols. Right from the beginning, the Philistine does not have anything to do with Yahweh of Israel. This was one of the reasons why Isaac was not pleased when Esau married his two wife which were from pagan nation. Both of them were Hittite Gen.26:34,35. Isaac was not pleased for what Esau had done but there was nothing he could do. The Hittite were among the nations which God said the children of Israel should destroy on getting to the land of Canaan. Deut.7:1-2.
c. His relationship with God: It’s a clear issue that Isaac had close relationship with God just like Abraham his father. God do appear to Abraham while he was yet alive, Isaac was also privileged to be able to hear from God too. God instructed Abraham to go down to Egypt when there was famine in the lad of Canaan but during the time of Isaac, there was famine in the land of Gerar. He wanted to go down to Egypt but God told him not to go that he should stay in the land (Gen.26:1-6). It is evident that Isaac was close with God although he may not have been referred to as a friend of God, yet there is footage in the scripture that speaks about God speaking with Isaac. Gen.26:24.
d. Relationship between God and people of his days: There was no clear relationship between people of his days and God. This was because of their practicing of idolatry. The Philistine were the inhabitant of Gerar. It was in their midst that Isaac lives. If not for the grace of God and for the teachings and commands believed to have been passed from Abraham to Isaac, maybe, Isaac too would have been like them because we have a trace of the behaviour of the Philistine in the life of Esau, one among the two sons of Isaac. Although, nothing was said about the religious life of this people in Genesis, but later in the Bible, we were made to know the kind of people they were. The pagan nations indeed. Deut.7:1ff; 1Kg.9:20,21.
e. His challenges (toiling, trials and temptation): At first, it was not easy with Isaac after the death of Abraham. He was seen been troubled by the Philistine in Gerar. Gen.26:1ff. There was a time his wife was about to be taken by King Abimelech who had onetime done such to Abraham his father. It was divine intervention of God that made Rebecca and Isaac to overcome the situation. One thing is very clear bout Isaac. It is seen in the Bible that Isaac was full of fear of the Philistine in Gerar. 26:7, for the sake of fairness or the beauty on Rebekah. Gen.20:1-18; 26:7-11. After this, Isaac sowed in in the land, and he received a hundred fold. His blessing at this time made the Philistine in Gerar to blocked all the wells he used to feed his flock. Another thing that stands as challenge to Isaac was the issue of Rebekah’s barrenness. Gen.25:21. Isaac was forty when he married Rebekah. We were unable to buttress the number of year that took him and his wife before they could give birth to Esau and Jacob. All we know is that they were barren after their marriage. 25:20-22.
f. The numbers of test passed: As regards the numbers of test passed, much was not said about Isaac been tested. But yet, we can still say, he passed a test when God instructed him not to go to Egypt when there was famine in Gerar. More so, his continual digging of well in spite of the unhealthy rivalry he witnesses in the hands of the Philistine in Gerar. Gen.26:2-6.
g. Goals from God, from him to the people of his days: What God actually wanted from Isaac is to stay in the covenant which He(God) had with Abraham his father. God wanted Isaac to be the carrier of Abrahamic blessing. He had had it in His mind that He will wipe out all this ungodly nation. Therefore, He(God) needed Isaac to carry out this great plan. Gen.26:3-5.
h. Test(s) that makes him a hero: Gen.22; Heb.11:17. The test that makes Isaac a hero happened when Abraham was still alive. God commanded Abraham to offer Isaac his son as sacrifice unto Him. Abraham did not deny God of the kind of sacrifice and item for the sacrifice. Though, as they were going, Isaac asked Abraham his father the animal for the sacrifice. By faith, Abraham responded the Lord will provide. On getting too the mountain, Abraham tied Isaac and place him on the altar. He was about slaughtering when God stopped him. For Isaac not to have struggled with his father and with total submission gives his life freely to be taken has ascribed him a hero at a tender age.
i. His failure: Can we say Isaac failed? But an event took place under his roof whereby he loved one above the other. This tears apart Isaac house. Isaac was interested in Esau while Rebekah was interested in Jacob. Because of the way he related with his two children, made Jacob to supplant Esau. He was unable to wilfully passed Abrahamic blessing and the covenant upon himself to the right person, Esau, being the first child of the family.
j. The missed promised: Like Abraham his father, he was unable to see the fulfilment of him becoming a great nation.
k. Lesson and teaching from his life: From his life, God was in control even though without looking at the challenges and fear of domineering been displayed by the Philistine in Gerar. If God be for you, your enemies will see themselves unfruitful if compare with what God is doing in your life. From his live we know that challenges shouldn’t stop us from becoming what God have said about us, it makes us to press forward the more until we achieve our goal. Gen.26:12-22.
